BizTalk and SQL Server Notification

The SQL Server platform includes a sophisticated Notification Services component that allows for various types of notification messages to be transmitted to subscriber destinations. Imagine being able to extend your BizTalk workflow to incorporate the various events that occur within SQL Server environments. BizTalk Utilities empowers your solutions to participate in event-driven execution of application logic by providing easy-to-use components.

How it Works

As part of the BizTalk Utilities Adapter for Databases suite, BizTalk Utilities supplies functionality that allows BizTalk Server to interface with SQL Server Notification Services. This provides the ability for BizTalk to both submit and receive notifications.

The adapter accomplishes this by introducing two specialized components:

1.      The Notification AIC component responsible for receiving messages from BizTalk Server, and forwarding them as event notifications to SQL Server Notification Services. This AIC is set up using the Notification Services Wizard. Some sample screens from this configuration utility are displayed below.

2.      The Notification Receive Function that enables BizTalk to act as a subscriber to notification events. Once events occur, notification messages from SQL Server Notification Services are sent directly to this receive function. BizTalk Utilities provides a separate Notifications Services Receive Function Wizard that allows this component to be easily configured. See below for some sample dialog screens.

Summary

The type of notification functionality provided by BizTalk Utilities is a natural fit for BizTalk’s messaging-oriented server. It gives you the ability to extend your solution in a variety of new ways, by providing you with the option of basing workflow logic on events that occur outside of the BizTalk environment. All of this can be accomplished with two easy-to-use and easy-to-setup components from BizTalk Utilities.
