BizTalk Utilities Installation

The BizTalk Utilities suite of products provides a wide range of extensions to BizTalk Server. From database adapters to messaging connectors, and all of the many utilities that nicely complement and complete the native BizTalk environment, the overall feature-set is diverse and comprehensive. There is, however, one characteristic that each and every BizTalk Utilities component has in common: easy and efficient installation.

How it works

The diagram below simply illustrates the step-by-step process provided for installing and configuring BizTalk Utilities components.

BizTalk Utilities accomplishes this through the use of configuration Wizards. These installation tools consist of a set of user-interfaces that prompt the user for installation and configuration parameters. This concept is similar to many existing software products, but is not commonly found with third-party back-end components. Additionally, extra effort was put into the design of the Wizard forms. Each provides plain English instructions and requests user input within a specific context.

To demonstrate a Wizard in action, let’s look at the series of forms a user must complete in order to set up the BizTalk Utilities Fax Application Integration Component.

Step 1: Enter a name and description.

Step 2: Enter the destination fax server and an optional style sheet.

Step 3: Set various fax document properties.

And that’s it!

Summary

Intuitive and user-friendly configuration Wizards are one of the key reasons the BizTalk Utilities product suite has been so successful. Not only do they greatly simplify the installation and configuration of BizTalk Utilities components, they establish a consistent user experience for the overall deployment process. Even when setting up different types of components, users acquire a familiarity with the steps involved. This increases the clarity of each Wizard user-interface, and that in turn leads to a more efficient and accurate implementation.
