we have noticed that the polling frequency seems to slip on each poll (inconsistently)

ie, we have the polling set to 1 hour and we are getting polling at the likes of   12:00.00, 13:00.04, 14:00.09, 15:00.22, 16:00.26

does the polling get affected by the time taken to process the message ?  shouldn't do ?

is there anything that could let this timed event slip ?

The polling will definitely be affected by the processing time.

Are you not looking for a Service Window?

ie only process between 9am-5pm for example ?

not really - eventually we want to poll the database twice daily so that business users have a time windows during the morning and afternoon in which to complete their work on another system and set stuff ready for processsing at midday and at midnight.....when the receive polls happen and process the messages with BizTalk.

eg. we set the polling to 12 hours and start the host instance at midday (1st poll at midnight) - ideally we'd want this not to slip to  12:30am etc after a week

This is exactly what a service window does.
