DOMXPath Function query

PHP Version: (No version information might be only in CVS. I have used this function in PHP5)

Description

This function executes an xpath query and returns the result as nodlist.

Usage:

objectDOMXPath->query ( string expression [, object contextnode])

Returns a DOMNodelist containing all nodes matching expression. Any expression which do not return nodes will return an empty DOMNodelist.

The optional contextnode can be specified for doing relative XPath queries.

PHP Code:

<?php

$xmlstr = <<<XML

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<company>

<employee>

<employeename id="myId">test1</employeename>

<employeeaddress>testAddress1</employeeaddress>

<SSN>11111</SSN>

<company>XYZ Corporation</company>

</employee>

<employee>

<employeename id="myId1">test1</employeename>

<employeeaddress>testAddress1</employeeaddress>

<SSN>11111</SSN>

<company>ABC Corporation</company>

</employee>

</company>

XML;

$dom = new domDocument;

//load the XML string into the DOM

$dom->loadXML($xmlstr);

//retrieve the second element with name employee

$employee = $dom->getElementsByTagName('employee')->item(1);

//creates a new domXPath object by passing the DOM Document

$xpath = new domXPath($dom);

//create a xpath query to return employeename with id  myId

$query = "//employeename[@id='myId']";

//execute the xpath query

$xpathQuery = $xpath->query($query);

//append the result nodes into second employee element

$size = $xpathQuery->length;

for ($i=0; $i<$size; $i++){

   $node = $xpathQuery->item($i);

   $employee->appendChild($node);

echo "<HTML>";

echo "<Head>";

echo "<title>Example of DOMXPath->query</title>";

echo "<Head>";

echo "<body>";

echo "<PRE>";

echohtmlentities($dom ->saveXML());

echo "</PRE>";

echo "</body>";

echo "</HTML>";

?>

The expected output would be:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<company>
<employee>
      <!—employeename element is missing here because it is added to second employee element by using above PHP code -->
      <employeeaddress>testAddress1</employeeaddress>
      <SSN>11111</SSN>
      <company>XYZ Corporation</company>
</employee>
<employee>
      <employeename id="myId1">test1</employeename>
      <employeeaddress>testAddress1</employeeaddress>
      <SSN>11111</SSN>
      <company>ABC Corporation</company>
<employeename id="myId">test1</employeename></employee>
</company>
