of 1059 | Dynamics CRM platform at PDC - The PDC team have been slowly releasing details of some of the sessions for the upcoming conference. Lo and behold there’s session up there for CRM.  It looks like we might have something to say at PDC about the next release.  Now would probably be a good time to register for PDC as it usually gets sold out pretty early. CRM/Dynamics: Developing Business Applications Developers will learn how to build business applications that integrate with Office applications, Windows Workflow Foundation, and SQL Server analytics through the Microsoft Dynamics CRM application foundation. This session will show developers how to develop business applications and package them to run as a......

of 1059 | Podcasting Kit for SharePoint released to CodePlex - Microsoft have been using a Podcasting technology in house for a little while now called "Academy Mobile".  This system allows internal Microsoft staff to record, upload, subscribe, download and listen to internal Podcasts simply and securely from inside or outside the network boundaries. Microsoft have just announced the release of the framework behind this system to CodePlex, the open source community site.   The Podcasting Kit for SharePoint will enable customers, partners and anyone else using SharePoint to rapidly obtain a Podcasting capability within SharePoint. What Can You Do With Podcasting Kit for SharePoint (PKS)?: Listen and watch audio/video p......

of 1059 | Store custom objects configuration in separate custom configuration files using EntLib - We are going to have a windows service that will run a few workflow(WF) instances. I want to have configuration information to be stored in  separate config files for each WF instance. I remembered that EntLib has helper classes to store custom objects configuration in separate custom configuration file, but finding good examples in Google wasn't easy(probably I didn't find good search keywords). The links that I finally found(more relevant to the task first) Tom Hollander 'post External configuration files in Enterprise Library for .NET Framework 2.0 mostly talks about EntLib provider config sections, but comments are talking about FileConfigurationSource  and custom sections. Alois K......

of 1059 | Soaring to New Heights in Telemedicine and eHealth - I am writing this from Tromso, Norway, where later today I will deliver a keynote address at the Tromso Telemedicine and eHealth Conference.  Preceding me on stage is Dr. Clayton Christensen of Innovator's Dilemma fame.  I believe my message on healthcare delivery innovation and the power of commodity IT will reverberate well with what Dr. Christensen has to say. Tromso is a town of about 60,000 residents in Norway's north.  It is so far north, on the same latitude as Barrow, Alaska, that the sun never sets during the summer months and likewise never rises during the winter.  Tromso is also home to the University of North Norway, the northernmost university in the wor......

of 1059 | Speaking at WDNUG next Wednesday - I got a note from Kirk Barrett last night to say that his speaker for next Wednesday had had to withdraw. I'll be making the trek South to deliver a session on Developing Office Business Applications. Visual Studio 2008 and the Office Development Platform The 2007 Microsoft Office system has evolved into a business application platform that developers can use to build and deploy Office Business Applications (OBAs). This session provides an overview of OBAs and demonstrates how developers can use Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) to customize Microsoft Office applications, improve the User Experience with Ribbon and Region customisations, enable business workflows with Sharepoint ......

of 1059 | Tech Ed Developers 2008 - I’m about to fly back to Redmond after attending and speaking @ TechEd Orlando 2008.  It was a rewarding experience in many different ways.  Perhaps the best part was to have the opportunity to interact with dozens of devoted MS developers and moreover devoted CRM developers.   The concept of CRM as a business application platform is really taking off.  Developers that had little to no idea what CRM (or Dynamics for that matter) was all about were literally amazed after we showcased some of the most basic platform capabilities such as creating custom objects from scratch, automating business processes using workflow, building reports with the reporting wizard etc.......

of 1059 | Sharepoint workflows on steriods! - When asked about the high points of his career at Microsoft, Bill Gates answered Windows 95 and Sharepoint Portal Server(MOSS). We all know that MOSS is selling massive! The MOSS platform has some workflow features built into the product, but they are somewhat limited. On the otherhand K2 has Blackpearl, a great full blown Business Process Management suite. A lot of companies have already MOSS or are going to the MOSS platform and in every company there are workflows. But a lot of companies want to start small with implementing workflows. So I think there is..... uhhh, was a gap between MOSS and doing BPM. I guess the guys from K2 recognized this gap  and the potential of wor......

I have been assisting some of these GISVs on their S+S efforts, and I thought it would be useful to share some key ISV-specific learning and resources that may be helpful to you in your endeavors.   Today, most of our larger GISV partners produce products targeted to the enterprise space – that is, they are feature rich, highly customizable, and installed and deployed on-premise (e.g. within customer environments). 18 of 1059 | Panorama-Fotospielereien mit Windows Live Fotogalerie - Vergangenes Wochenende war ich auf Oliver Gassners Barcamp Bodensee.

of 1059 | AVCHD Recipe for Expression Encoder 2 - I've been chatting with Scott Stanfield, CEO of Vertigo about AVCHD camcorders and we discussed how to best implement an AVCHD workflow in Expression Encoder. I recently posted a "recipe" for how to import HDV footage and encode it using Expression Encoder 2, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to write up something similar for AVCHD. There's a lot of interest in the AVCHD format and it is used by a number of tapeless consumer camcorders. Jointly developed by Sony and Panasonic, AVCHD uses an MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec for video and Dolby Digital AC-3 or Linear PCM for audio. AVCHD is only used for tapeless camcorders, which means DVD-, hard drive- and flash memory-based de......

It must be an interesting move for many of the individuals involved since some of the people behind Gradual were instrumental in building Enfocus prior to its acquisition by EskoArtwork. One of those people was Peter Camps, who founded both Enfocus and Gradual and is now "Senior Vice President Enfocus in the EskoArtwork group". 22 of 1059 | VSX, VISUG and Multi-mania events - I'm really running behind with my blogging, these have been busy weeks. I was at several community events and did a presentation at Multi-mania. Wow, that was a first where everybody was talking around mostly non-Microsoft products. Gill, Brecht and I were the only ones doing sessions on Microsoft technologies. 23 of 1059 | Threat Management the bigger picture - Threat Modeling is one those ‘sciences’ that is just now starting to gel into something that can be implemented in a semi-automated fashion.  With TAM/e, we have a good approach to threat modeling that is both easy on the development team, and fairly comprehensive (perhaps too much so).  However there are still two very different camps on the subject within Microsoft, and a few more outside. There have been a lot of advances in groups such as PTA (Practical Threat Analysis http://www.ptatechnologies.com/ ) as well as a push to formalize Attack Patterns (yours truly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_patterns and http://www.attackpatterns.org/ , Mitre / Homeland Secu......

of 1059 | What is an Office Business Application? - Is it a macro? A sharepoint customisation? A mashup? What is important, in my mind, is that the user is shielded from the complexity (or lack of it) in the process and the application can just stay out of their way so they can do their job and keep using the tools they are familiar with, whether that is browser based (I would recommend SharePoint) or rich client (Word, Excel Powerpoint...). Technically, I think this conceptual architecture explains it well: From Office Business Applications: Pricing Exception Management Solution OBAs are not just an Office Client thing, they are not the new flavour of macros (but they help us achieve things that we have tried to bend VBA to do for......

of 1059 | .NET Entity Framework: Is It Ready for Web Prime-Time? - Our shop has been looking for a way to simplify the interaction between our domain layer and data layer.  The data layer uses typed datasets for all its operations.  When it retrieves data, it populates a dataset; when it stores data, it checks the DataRowState of all rows in the dataset, and calls the appropriate stored procedure to insert, update, or delete the data.  The domain layer then uses dataset elements as the in-memory backing store for properties and collections.  A collection typically uses a DataTable, for example, and a collection member would use a DataRow in the DataTable. This arrangement has some advantages: Between requests, domain objects can cache their state i......

of 1059 | Developing Workflow Solutions with SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows Workflow Foundation - My friend, Ali Mazaheri, has co-authored a paper on MSDN, "Developing Workflow Solutions with SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows Workflow Foundation."  It's a great read, especially for those of you who know a bit about WF and are curious how to translate those skills to SharePoint development. One of the great things about Visual Studio 2008 is that it hides a lot of the deployment stuff from you, you get a nice wizard experience that lets you wire the workflow... and it even does the feature installation and deployment for you.  You still need to understand what's going on behind the scenes, and this paper will certainly show you just how much work Visual Studio 2008 ......

of 1059 | The Portal is Dead! Long Live the Portal! - I had a great time presenting at the Perth SharePoint User Group last Tuesday. I've uploaded my deck to my SkyDrive if you're interested. The session talked about surfacing relevant information in the context in which it's needed. The example I gave is of a sales person who gets an email from a customer requesting an increase in the number of widgets in their current order from 1000 to 1500 units. Traditionally, this has meant that as the sales person I would have to do the following things Look up the customer in the CRM system to find the contact history for the company and a link into the accounting system Look up the company in the accounting system to check that they've got ......

of 1059 | Version Info Path forms when versioning workflows in MOSS - Versioning of Workflows with InfoPath forms in MOSS is not supported out of the box. How to do it is described in Dan Herzog's blog ( https://blogs.pointbridge.com/Blogs/herzog_daniel/Pages/Post.aspx?_ID=4). I would add a few words about how to handle the Info Path forms versioning. In the workflow.xml file the namespaces of the InfoPath forms are referenced using Task{Nr}_FormURN elements. From one version of a workflow to another not necessarily all forms will change. The forms which are not changed from one workflow version to another can be taken out from the installation procedure. They are already were saved in the form templates list when the previous versions of the workflow were d......

of 1059 | Enterprise Library 3.1 - Different Configuration Sources Across Blocks - I recently had a co-worker inquire about using different configuration sources across different application blocks within the Enterprise Library.  As has already been demonstrated (both in the EntLib documentation and on various websites), it's extremely simple to modify the source of configuration information for the entire Enterprise Library.  This is provided both by the EntLib framework and the configuration tool.  Simple create a new/alternate Configuration Source, set it as the default configuration source, and away you go.  You can use one of the out-of-the-box configuration sources (alternate file source, e.g.) or write your own (put configuration in Sql, a flat file, registry, or w......
