1 of 2003 | 25. Architect Forum - Some Thoughts about the Feedback - While the feedback for yesterday's forum was in the good average range for all architect forums (typically the architects are more critical than others;)), I really started thinking about the future of the platform and the way we are driving this platform. But, why did I start to think about it? Well, yesterday was the first forum after a very long time where I selected the topic really based on the feedback I've got from several architects and customers in the past 8-10 months - Enterprise Service Bus, which is a very concrete and not very strategic and visionary topic. But I really got that feedback from several architects, so I thought it makes sense discussing about this topic - alth......
2 of 2003 | ACM Article: Restful web services vs. big web services: making the right architectural decision - Great article on ACM regarding when to use REST vs. WS-* standards that are in wide use in SOA architectures today. Very interesting reading for those who may want to take the light-weight approach vs. using the webservice composition and discovery tools that enterprises may find in the TIBCO and IBM SOA stack. ABSTRACT Recent technology trends in the Web Services (WS) domain indicate that a solution eliminating the presumed complexity of the WS-* standards may be in sight: advocates of REpresentational State Transfer (REST) have come to believe that their ideas explaining why the World Wide Web works are just as applicable to solve enterprise application integration problems and to si......
3 of 2003 | Gartner Podcast: SOA Lessons Learned From the Trenches - Gartner came out with a good podcast of one of their sessions from the Gartner Enterprise Architecture Summit. It is a very informative panel discussion about "Lessons Learned From the Trenches" with SOA/Enterprise Architecture. Anyone who is an Enterprise Architect or Technology/Business Executive embracing the change and possibilities of SOA in their organization will want to give it a listen. Chances are very good you'll be vigorously nodding your head and maybe even feeling a little bit better about yourself knowing you are not alone in dealing with these problems. Much of the conversation is about how to drive SOA adoption (it appears relying on developers to browse a reposi......
4 of 2003 | IONA and Microsoft -
Recently I've been working on IONA's partnership with Microsoft.
That has been keeping me very busy. Trips to Redmond, Nashville and
Copenhagen for various events, and lots of other activities.
IONA
and Microsoft have a history. IONA has always recognized the value of
Microsoft in the IT organizations of the worlds most successful
corporations. Back when people were talking about COM Vs CORBA in the
90s, IONA recognized the opportunity to bridge both technologies. IONA
understood that Microsoft dominated the desktop in large enterprises
(OS/2 was ......

5 of 2003 | IP Babble Banner -
The new IP Babble banner is made up of the following:
It ought to be obvious but the cloud is the IP network and, of course, it is babbling.
In the background I've included a picture I took while in Tokyo recently. It was taken from the top of the Hotel New Otani.
Actually the building in which IONA has its office is just right and
below of center behind the "sizeof(" code. The orignial (though
resized) picture is found here.
The code layered over the photo includes some Web Services
Description Language (WSDL) taken, but modified, from a sample WSDL in
the open source ESB Celtix. It also includes some IP code from the ip.c file of the open source Unix ......
6 of 2003 | Last Week SOCA. This Week Catalyst -
Last week I was in L.A. talking about SOA on an expert panel at SOCA 2007.
It was an honor to be on the panel. I really enjoyed Prof. Wei-Tek
Tsai's discussion about how the process for developing SOA has not yet
being completely figured out yet. He claims there was a big shift in
methodologies and processes when we went to OO and that a similar shift
is needed in SOA. I mentioned some of my experience in this shift in a
previous blog called Trusted Services Network. I hope to catch up with Prof. Tsai regarding this in the future.
Today I've just finished my presentation on OSGi at Burton Group's Catalyst conference
in San Francisco. My presentation was well ......
7 of 2003 | Sun SOA Dog Food? -
Is this article
for real? I'm not sure that if I were Sun I'd have a link to an article
titled "How Sun sells its SOA dog food to its own employees" on my SOA
web page. But that's where I found it. Ouch! I personally don't eat dog food.
Anyway, I guess the bigger question is whether anyone else is eating
this dog foo... I mean JCAPS besides Sun. And from the article it
sounds like Sun had a hard time stomaching it.
This article does a good job in explaining some of the difficulties
that a novice can have trying to sell SOA. Ricigliano, a senior manager
at Sun tries to sell SOA internally. The article says, "he quickly
found that it didn't work to go into a m......

11 of 2003 | Career 2.0 Starts Monday, October 6th 2008 - I made a comment about this in a prior post, but it was really long and wordy so unless you read right to the end you would have missed the announcement. So I figured I’d post a little ‘update’ to fill everyone in on what’s been going down. Over the last seven years I’ve worked for numerous small companies here in Winnipeg. I’ve been part of some interesting projects, had some successes, some failures, and a lot of lessons learned. I’ve tested the waters of independent consulting and had great success with it. But now I’m at a point where I need to look at the next 5 to 10 years of my life and where my career fits in: what environment do I want, what technologies excite me, knowing my s......

12 of 2003 | SOA Symposium Next Week - I'll be at the SOA Symposium in Amsterdam next week, and am really excited about it. Amsterdam's a great place, I've been there a few times, and this is looking like it will be a really good event. I could do without yet-another trans-Atlantic flight, but, I'm getting pretty good at doing them. At the Symposium, I'll be doing: My first-ever public-facing Oslo presentation, and to the best of my knowledge the second-ever conference presentation on Oslo by a non-Microsoft person (my friend David Chappell was first with one at TechEd this year). This is huge, and a major milestone that I can now talk about at least some of the vision (more will become public at PDC). A panel on the ......
13 of 2003 | Understanding Governance as Decision Rights - Todd Biske, whom I respect for his writings on SOA, seemed to miss the mark in his recent blog post about SOA Governance and Decision Rights. In that post, he said: if you focus on education, you can allow individual teams to make decisions, because you’ve given them the necessary information to make the right decisions. If they don’t have the information to make decisions that will lead toward the desired behavior, it turns into a guessing game. Not only can there be confusion in what the correct decisions are, there can also be confusion on what decisions should be escalated up the chain. If we instead focus on creating policies and making those policies known so tha......

38 of 2003 | What is an Architecture Style? - Recently, I have had discussions with folks at Microsoft about Architecture Styles. This term has been used in the IT industry for a very long time. I think the earliest reference was in the early 80's. But that is neither here, nor there in my opinion. We have been using this concept for a long time. As you can see from my graphic I used above, architecture styles are also used in the other architecture field as well. I think this provides us with a great way of relating what that means to our field. So what is this term, Architecture Style? It's a bit difficult to answer this as there really isn't a full definition for this term. It's a lot like standards such as IEEE 1471. There is ......

41 of 2003 | Project planning and application life cycle management - One of the most important and often overlooked things to cover in planning phase of the projects is the application life cycle (ALM) management for upcoming portal. In this context I don't mean just the lifecycle management for the customizations, rather for the full process and environments. Every single project done with SharePoint technologies (WSS/MOSS), should define the clear rules and practices to manage the process as early as possible. By setting the ground rules immediately in the planning phase of the project, you can take them into account during the technical planning of the deployment and of course also in the operational planning.
