of 2150 | MSFT -= vapourware - Interesting quote from Rich Turner's blog today:"Microsoft explicitly does not claim to have a SOA. We do not subscribe to the notions of SOA and do not refer to any of our products as SOA. We do strongly subscribe to the notions of SO as abstract guidance and goals for building distributed systems. We have a broad range of powerful products, technologies and services which can be used to construct sophisticated, powerful, efficient solutions ... but we don't have a SOA because we don't believe such a thing exists, and if it is, its too poorly defined for us to adopt."...

of 2150 | On Writing: Before you apply to this lab... - There are certain places that people expect text to be rote, boring, and dry. When you come in with some humanity instead, it really stands out. Example: Sönke Johnsen’s “Advice For Potential Graduate Students,” a wonderful piece of writing that is given to lab applicants. An excerpt: In many ways you will turn into your advisor. Advisors teach very little, but instead provide a role model. Consciously and unconsciously, you will imitate your advisor. You may find this hard to believe now, but fifteen years from now, when you find yourself lining up the tools in your lab cabinets just like your advisor did, you’ll see. My student Alison once said that choosing an......

(you never really get that appreciation till you hit the ground)> Cold....very cold!!! Now I've been skiing many times, but this was just something else. It caused Beijing to be blanketed in snow and very beautiful - What a fantastic place!!! Definitely a come back place - just nothing like what I expected. The people so friendly, helpful and always with purpose in their eyes. The food is some of the freshest I've eaten and such healthy diets (steamed cabbage, mushrooms etc etc) - nothing like the 'Western Chinese Resturants' back home :) ......

of 2150 | ARCast.TV - Steve Michelotti of e.imagination on High Performance Web Solutions - Dr. Zhiming Xue interviews Steve Michelotti, senior solution architect at e.magination. Steve discusses what his team had to do to build a highly available 64-bit based web solution that supports a demanding service level agreement (SLA): more than 3 billion daily transactions, 99.99% of all transactions under 250 ms response time. One particular challenge they faced was dealing with the garbage collection (GC) process that is normally managed by the CLR of the .NET framework. With potentially millions of .NET objects in memory, a generation 2 GC can take 5 to 8 seconds on a 64-bit server with 16 GB memory, which quickly breaks the SLA. At their first attempt Steve and his team tried to red......

of 2150 | Coming up for Air... - So its been a while since my last post...  okay, about 3 months if you check the archive.  I've been heads down for just about that long to help get the next release of the MSE ready (which will be available later this month).  We have been working on some really exciting scenarios and capabilities that will really help take SOA to the next level.  Of course, by SOA, I really mean massively distributed systems.  In this next release, we are taking service virtualization one step further by representing every single component of the service, from the server all the way back to the source system.  This not only allows you to maximize the reuse of those items as b......

of 2150 | SOA is Dead? It's About Time! - Anne Thomas Manes of the Burton Group raised quite a few hackles in the IT press yesterday when she asserted that SOA is Dead. Anne has the chops to talk on the subject - beyond her respectable career as an SOA Analyst for the Burton Group, she was also a former CTO of Systinet, an SOA governance company that eventually was bought up by Hewlett Packard, and was one of the early architects of the WS-* architecture ... so when she says "It's dead, Jim", people listen. ...

of 2150 | SOA is not dead; the dream of silver bullet is, again! - Anne Thomas Manes has an interesting post stated that SOA is dead.   Despite the dramatic eye-catching writing style, she does get a little bite on the issue. "Successful SOA (i.e., application re-architecture) requires disruption to the status quo. SOA is not simply a matter of deploying new technology and building service interfaces to existing applications; it requires redesign of the application portfolio. And it requires a massive shift in the way IT operates. Does this sound familiar to you? If not, let' see this part "The latest shiny new technology will not make things better. Incremental integration projects will not lead to significantly reduced costs and increased agility......

of 2150 | The cloud-SOA connection - Cloud computing may have overtaken SOA as the trendy technology term du jour, but the two concepts can be paired to bolster service deployments, industry experts say. With cloud computing, enterprises can access services hosted on third-party servers over the Internet. In SOA, enterprises use integrated application services in a more lightweight fashion than traditional application platforms. ...

of 2150 | TOGAF 9 is now available ! - There really has never been a better time to get into Enterprise Architecture as the global economic downturn means that smart companies will be looking at making efficiency savings through strategic implementations and process streamlining, identification of function duplication and better IT/business alignment. Enterprise Architecture is a hard thing to get off the ground so why try and re-invent the wheel and benefit from the experiences of others in many different organisations. Using a framework can help and this is what TOGAF is. TOGAF is one of the most popular Enterprise Architecture frameworks for many different reasons and justifies a post on it's own. The latest version is an in......

of 2150 | OBA Part 1 - Exposing Line-of-Business Data - Last post I talked about the high-level architecture of our Office Business Application for the new Northwind Traders. There are a lot of different architecture options to consider when building an OBA. OBA is all about using Microsoft Office with your Line of Business (LOB) data. Whether that involves using SharePoint as well depends on the application. Since we wanted to store the unstructured data (the Northwind customer P.O.) SharePoint is a good fit here. There are a lot of options when thinking about how to expose your LOB data. For instance, you may already have a service oriented architecture at the enterprise that exposes data contracts and processes that you can consume from Offi......

of 2150 | Mapping a Repeating Source to a Delimited List - My last couple of projects have been very interesting, challenging and a lot of fun.  My current project is no exception.  I have the pleasure of working with a great group of people (I've got to give a shout out to C-Mappity (Casey), v-slice (Dan), Sniff Packy Packet (Rich) and 10 Bit (pronounced 2 bit) (Mike) - you know who you are).  Anyways, this a great group and we are working on a fun project to create their services architecture which will be the framework for their ESB. During our redesign and re-platform of  some of their current services we have come up on some interesting scenarios.  One that I think many people may run into is the need to take a source......

of 2150 | Microsoft's Annual SOA and BP conference - SOA meets Cloud - Today we wrapped up the 6th annual SOA and BP conference here in Redmond.  This was the 14th stop on the tour which continues around the world thru April.  Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering the keynote to kick off the conference and took that opportunity to talk about both the last few weeks and the road ahead. As we talk to customers around the world, it’s clear that the message on SOA being a “how” rather than a “what” is really sinking in.  Now we spend more of our time talking about extending Service Orientation than we do defining it.  I took a very non-Microsoft approach – instead of blathering on about technology, I instead spent time debunking the myt......

of 2150 | Agent-Design Patterns for Building Distributed Service Bus Applications - Another blog that is several months late, but as usual, better late than never. I am currently preparing my presentation for tomorrow's Real World SOA: Microsoft SOA and Business Process Conference I finally made the time to read Danny Garber's paper on Agent-Design Patterns and it was well worth the read. Danny introduces the notion of a Distributed Service Bus (I think I have also heard him refer to it as an Internet Service Bus) allowing multiple organizations to collaborate on extremely complex business processes. As with most business processes, these are subject to service unavailability errors, message translation and enrichment requirements, but because they span multiple orga......

of 2150 | Microsoft in the Leaders quadrant for application infrastructure - It's been a long time coming, but this is great to see, from Steven Martin's blog.  I began the SOA journey with Microsoft in 2002, and it's great to see not only the external validation of the platform, but also to hear in the most recent earnings release that, despite the downturn, the server and tools business within Microsoft is growing at 15%. http://blogs.msdn.com/stevemar/archive/2009/01/27/microsoft-positioned-in-the-leaders-quadrant-of-latest-magic-quadrants-for-application-infrastructure.aspx Technorati Tags: interoperability,SOA,BizTalk,.NET,Microsoft...

of 2150 | Microsoft Positioned in the Leaders Quadrant of Latest Magic Quadrants for Application Infrastructure - The latest round of research is out from Gartner, and they have positioned Microsoft in the Leaders Quadrant of all three Application Infrastructure Magic Quadrants. The Magic Quadrant for Application Infrastructure for SOA Composite Application Projects , Magic Quadrant for Application Infrastructure for New Systematic SOA Application Projects,  and the Magic Quadrant for Application Infrastructure for Back-End Application Integration Projects. In my humble opinion, placement in the Leaders Quadrant validates Microsoft as a leading provider of platform technology for service orientation and integration. We believe that these reports highlight the depth of our offering in these space......

Us in this Evening Event on Software Plus Services at Reston VA, Jan. 28, 2009 - Software + Services is Microsoft's approach for the next generation of computing. Central to the strategy is bringing together the best of cloud-based services and the software that resides on a world of devices. The power of local client or on-premises server software combined with the reach and always up-to-date nature of services in the cloud will be more compelling than software OR service only approaches. The Software + Service approach is a confluence of multiple industry phenomena including SaaS, SOA, and Web 2.0. While different vendors are evolving their offerings from different starting points, the entire industry is converging on the Software + Service approach. The speakers wi......
