3 of 2791 | BizTalk Server 2009 and future roadmap - Since the announcement of "Oslo" and the excitement around Windows WF and WCF, many customers have been concerned about their investment in BizTalk Server or questioning whether it is a wise investment today. Microsoft just published their roadmap for BizTalk Server including some important information about how the current and future releases will integrate with the "Oslo" modeling platform. In addition, the next release of BizTalk Server, still promised in the first half of '09, has been renamed BizTalk Server 2009 (formerly BizTalk Server 2006 R3) because of the significant improvements. The good news is that Microsoft has clearly stated their i......

5 of 2791 | Using the WSDL-First design approach with WCF services - Couple of helpful posts from the archives for you.
If you are care about interop, then you probably want to use a contract-first or WSDL-first design for your web services. In other words, you will not simply decorate server-side code annotations (in Java) or attributes (in .NET) and generate WSDL dynamically from that running code. That approach works in demonstrations, but it does not lend itself to good interoperability in the long run.
So you start with WSDL. Since you are WCF-savvy, you are confining yourself to the subset of XML Schema that is friendly to WCF. The restriction isn't too onerous, though, especially as it improves interoperabil......
6 of 2791 | Windows Live Mesh, Silverlight and the CoreCLR - Disclaimer: Everything in this post is pure conjecture by me, done by simply poking around my system and talking to myself. I don't work for the Live Mesh team, nor do I know anyone on the team. Anyone could have written this. I was talking to Harry recently and we went poking around in the folder that the Windows Live Mesh client is in. On my machine it's in "C:\Users\scottha\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Live Mesh\" There's a lot of interesting stuff in there. There's a version of System.Core (LINQ) as well as System.ServiceModel (WCF), but most interestingly there's coreclr.dll. Where have I seen that before? I've seen it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Silverlight, of course. It's the S......

7 of 2791 | Sep - Oct 2008 - UNPLUGGED MSDN Update: Get Ready for Cloud-Based Services, IE8 & Silverlight 2 -
Get Ready for Cloud-Based Services, IE8 & Silverlight 2 MSDN UpdateSoftware-plus-Services is Microsoft's approach for the next generation of computing. It is a confluence of multiple industry phenomena including SaaS, SOA, and Web 2.0. This is more compelling than software OR service only approaches, bringing together the best of cloud-based services and the software that resides on a world of devices. Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference is taking place in LA late October 2008 where the veil will be lifted on a lot of technologies that have been in development for a number of years. This UNPLUGGED session has been created specifically for web focused developers to “get ready......

9 of 2791 | T4 template to generate Wix scripts to generate WCF MSIs in MSBuild - [Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/EltonStoneman]
Snappy title. We have a project which contains lots of WCF Service projects, and we want to generate MSIs so we can deploy them to IIS. The gaps between the projects are minimal as they all use the same structure, so instead of having separate Setup or Wix files in each of the solutions, generating the WXS files on the fly was an option.
The installer steps we wanted were reasonably simple:
install WCF artifacts to the chosen directory (.svc and web.config files)
install WCF binaries to the chosen directory\bin
install dependencies to the GAC
create a virtual directory in IIS pointing to the install directory......

16 of 2791 | Technical Currency Metric - I was recently presented a rather interesting question, “Are our products technically current?” The easy answer is to look at something like whether or not our web applications will run on the latest version of IIS and whether or not our applications perform properly under the latest browser versions. That’s the easy way out though. It turns out to be a far more layered question as you begin asking these sorts of follow-on question. How far back must we provide functionality to our clients? Do we still support that version of SQL Server, Oracle, IIS, or Apache? How much time between a new product releases (say, Internet Explorer 8) and our public support for it? 3months, 6 months,......

17 of 2791 | Design: SOA Taxonomy, an object oriented approach - An essential part of the SOA Governance is to properly identify the requirements in order to introduce or upgrade a service within your SOA model, this is commonly known and service and integration planning within the SOA lifecycle. This is all good in theory but the nightmares start when architects are trying to put it in practice.
As an application development consultant here at Microsoft we constantly find chaos in the SOA first attempts, the main reason behind this is the lack of services organization. This not only brings problems to the model that are expensive to change but does not shows business value to the stakeholders, as they cannot see any ROI in the implementation. As a res......

27 of 2791 | WCF Durable services explained. - WCF Durable services are WCF services in which the operations can remember the values of private variables (=the state of the service) inbetween restarts of the serivcehost and/or client. This is new in .NET 3.5 and the concept goes beyond the idea of .NET 3.0 WCF sessions. In WCF sessions the service keeps the content in a session environment which is not persisted by default, this means that the service can only remember the data as long as it is running. When the service is down, the data is lost. Also when the client is restarted the session is not accessible anymore because the client creates a new session by instantiating the proxy. With durable services all state in the service is pe......

30 of 2791 | Serialization issue with timestamp in LINQ to SQL - Many of you use timestamp in LINQ to SQL because it's easier for us figure out if an object is new or not. This is specially useful when we need to track the state of objects in disconnected/N-tier scenarios. An important thing to note, though, is that the timestamp column is mapped as a System.Data.Linq.Binary property in the LINQ generated object so it is part of the XML serialization when you use the LINQ to SQL objects in Web Services/WCF services. The real problem is that System.Data.Linq.Binary doesn't have a parameterless constructor. Take a look at the Binary's constructor documented in MSDN. There's no parameterless constructor available to the class. What this means is the serial......

34 of 2791 | BizTalk and SOA - So, it's been a while since I've blogged. Life has been hectic and I'm currently spreading my time between two projects so blog time has been in short supply, even though my blog-to-do list is growing! Anyway, so what is this post all about? It's about where BizTalk fits architecturally within the new "hot" world of Service Oriented Architectures. BizTalk Server, as we know, is a middleware product that enables integration between LOB applications and systems in an EAI scenario and trading partners in a B2B scenario. As part of this broad area of responsibility BizTalk is able to execute business processes that implement complex integration or workflow scenarios, transform data fr......

However, the interesting observation was that the load test results showed the system couldn't support more than 3 concurrent users, as the WEB server processor was 100% utilized. Web Service Software Factory Modeling Edition
The Web Service Software Factory (WSSF) Modeling Edition focuses on building the server side of a web services infrastructure, using either ASMX or WCF services. The new release uses three Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) to model services: service contract, data contract and host models. Through use of these DSLs, WSSF helps developers construct a scalable, extensible web service framework from the service interfaces to the translation of domain data into business entities, and back! This session will get you jump-started in building your own services in......

In the very first post, I touched on some aspects of REST, but I haven't spent much time on the benefits of following a RESTful architectural style. I made mention of the fact that RESTful services follow the "way of the web". As it turns out, this proves to be quite powerful. The first 2 sentences of Section 13 of the HTTP 1.1 Specification highlight this point quite well: "HTTP is typically used for distributed information systems......

42 of 2791 | Serving Silverlight applications on client PCs without a web server using WCF 3.5 - There are scenarios where you don’t want to have IIS installed on a machine and you still want to serve a Silverlight application for local or remote users. One of this scenario is an embedded machine that controls some machinery that needs to have a local UI and a remote UI.
I have lately run in one of this scenario where an embedded PC needs to control some external switches and motors that sould have a local (touch panel) UI and a couple remote PC, eventually even on mobile devices. Although IIS can be installed on the machine it seems a bit of overkill for serving a .xap file only.
