Information Loss and Schema Complexity

Recently I was struggling within a column about the concept of complexity within schemas, trying to put together a number of fairly amorphous ideas into something resembling a premise. Even these first tentative thoughts have evinced some interest, and the feedback has given me something more to think about.

One of the questions that I`ve been trying to figure out is whether there exists some empirical measure that can be used to determine the complexity of a given schema. I wanted to clarify this a little bit, as there have been some comments on xml-dev that I think have taken these out of context.
