Given all the announcements and implications from the Mix'07 conference, I am writing this N&N attempting to capture in a list what it all means, at least what I think it means. I'm going to skip categories since the announcements span technologies.

  • Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 Beta - for Mac or for Windows
The runtime required to experience Silverlight.
      • Microsoft Silverlight 1.1 Alpha - for Mac or for Windows
The runtime required to view Silverlight applications created with .NET
      • Check here for development, designer tools, SDKs and Samples!
      • Perhaps of the largest interest to many of us and to those outside the community the announcement of the Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) (see Larry O' Brian analysis here) and IronRuby!! (they put John to good use)
      • They made the full source code for both IronPython and all of the new DLR platform code available on codeplex under the BSD-style Microsoft Permissive License. All of that code can be downloaded today as part of the IronPython project at
      • The Silverlight community website,, has launched
      • Silverlight Streaming with Windows Live has launched in as an Alpha (i.e., pre-Beta) service
      • The Microsoft Expression Studio has been released as a suite consisting of Expression Design, Expression Web, Expression Blend and Expression Media.
      • Incubation project Astoria from the ADO.NET Team: The goal of Microsoft Codename "Astoria" is to enable applications to expose data as a data service that can be consumed by web clients within a corporate network and across the internet. The data service is reachable over HTTP, and URIs are used to identify the various pieces of information available through the service. Interactions with the data service happens in terms of HTTP verbs such as GET, POST, PUT and DELETE, and the data exchanged in those interactions is represented in simple formats such as XML and JSON. Check out the Astoria webpage at for more information and a link to the download.
      • Another ADO.NET incubation project: Project Jasper. "Jasper” uses a set of new technologies to make this happen:

        ·         Dynamic generation of data classes so there is no configuration or design time code-gen to carry around.

        ·         Rich query and O/R capabilities because “Jasper” is built on top of the Entity Framework.

        ·         Auto-binding capabilities for ASP.NET, WinForms, and WPF to make binding data to a UI simple and automatic.

I'm rocking out to Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (Live At The Fillmore East) by Jimi Hendrix from the album Live At The Fillmore East
