Microsoft has announced its plan to use XML schemas in the new "Microsoft Office Open XML Formats" for its next version of Microsoft Office editions, now referenced under the code-name "Office 12." These "default" XML file formats are designed as an extension of the WordprocessingML and SpreadsheetML schemas and are intended to be interoperable with binary formats of Office 2000 and later. The ZIP package format supports compression and error checking.
