of 19626 | Amazon puts human genome, other data sets in the cloud - Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Thursday said it will publish data sets such as the Human Genome, U.S. Census and labor statistics to its cloud to make the information easier to access for researchers. For starters, Amazon will publish various U.S. Census databases from the U.S. Census Bureau, 3-D chemical structures provided by Indiana University and [...] ...

of 19626 | An Alternative Queuing Model - Before talking about the new model for queued transports that we've added to WCF 4.0, let's first look at the traditional transacted receive pattern. Start a transaction. This can be relatively cheap although we'll have to pay more for the transaction once we actually have a resource (message) and other participants. Wait for a message to be available. If we don't get a message, abort the transaction we started and try again from the beginning. Receive the contents of the message under the transaction, removing it from the queue. Do some work inside the transaction. When all of the participants complete their work, the transaction can complete. A successfully completed tra......

of 19626 | Events last week - Last week I attended a couple of events. On Wednesday Microsoft held a SOA/BPM day at the offices in Reading and a number of speakers talked about SOA, the Microsoft platform now and in the future and how to deliver the SOA promise using those technologies. It was a mix of stuff I already new or had seen before and some other perspectives. Darren Jefford gave a good demo on the new wave of cloud technologies. One interesting comment relayed something Don Box had said – that we are only 15 years into a 30 year journey on where Microsoft would like to be in terms of modelling and tools. The jump to the cloud platform is the next step but the current suite of technologies we have seen are ver......

of 19626 | I have uploaded Jaxen 1.1.2, an open source XPath 1.0 engine written in Java that supports multiple object models including DOM, XOM, JDOM, and dom4j. - I have uploaded Jaxen 1.1.2, an open source XPath 1.0 engine written in Java that supports multiple object models including DOM, XOM, JDOM, and dom4j. It is also flexible enough to be adapted to XML views of non-XML data structures. For instance, PMD uses it to enable XPath expressions to query compiled Java byte code. Version 1.1.2 is believed to be fully conformant with the XPath 1.0 specification, modulo undiscovered bugs. This release fixes assorted a couple of significant bugs that incorrectly evaluated some XPath expressions. You should upgrade when you get a chance. Jaxen is published under a modified BSD license....

of 19626 | The Lowdown on Services and Products - The following is republished from The SitePoint Tribune #424. Should you offer services or products? The old phrase, The grass is always greener … is often heard when discussing the merits of services versus web-based products. Listed below are some of the advantages and disadvantages of both models. Which ones apply to you? Products — Advantages • gives you unlimited income potential, because time constraints are minimal (unlike selling services) • enables lower prices for the consumer, as costs can be amortized over more customers • allows you to concentrate on building one main project, rather than several small ones • presents a choice of different revenue models, which are simpler t......

of 19626 | XML Content Parts in the OpenXML SDK DocumentReflector - [Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/EltonStoneman] The latest release of the OpenXML SDK (v2.0 September 2008 CTP) comes with the DocumentReflector tool which can load an OpenXML document and reverse engineer the code for generating that document with the SDK. It's very handy but there's an issue with it when you have a Word document with content parts that contain XML. In this scenario, DocumentReflector will build the XML content for the part like this: public static void GenerateCustomXmlPart1(OpenXmlPart part) { System.IO.StreamWriter writer = new System.IO.StreamWriter(part.GetStream()); writer.Write("<?xml version=\"1.0\" encodin......

of 19626 | [WCF]How to supply dedicated credentials for webproxy authentication in WCF client - [WCF]How to supply dedicated credentials for webproxy authentication in WCF client   I’ve found several issue request on how to supply credentials for webproxy(intermediate proxy server) authentication in client application which consumes WCF service. When performing some remote network accessing such as WebRequest call, Webservice call or WCF call, it’s common that the client will need to provide some credentials for the service application’s authentication. However, it is also possible that client need to supply credentials for some intermediate proxy server’s authentication. At the 2007 conference, the most talked about sneak was “Thermo,” recently made official as Flash Catalyst. This year, the honor of coolest upcoming project at Adobe might go to Meermeer, a new cross browser testing tool that will completely make Browsershots.org obsolete. Meermeer, which is set to debut as an online service and Dreamweaver CS4 extension on Adobe Labs sometime next year, is a cross browser web site testing tool that will be delivered as a service. I was able to get a demo of Meermeer today from Adobe Senior Product Manager Devin Fernandez and Product M......

of 19626 | ARCast.TV Interview on Channel9 - 64-bit Computing Technology for Highly Scalable Applications - In the past couple of years, I had the unique opportunity to lead of team of developers building one of the highest (if not THE highest) volume .NET application in the world.  With more than 3 billion requests per day and an SLA of 99.99% of requests under 250ms, we had some exciting challenges. Because the application was so performance intensive, we heavily utilized a huge in-memory cache.  Because of the size of our cache, we had some interesting challenges to overcome with .NET garbage collection in order to satisfy our SLA.  This led us to working with Microsoft to implement GC Notifications which were released in .NET 3.5 SP1. Of course the details of this could be a white paper unto......

of 19626 | Automation Objects in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 - Overview The Automation object is often used to integrate NAV business logic with external processes and thereby extend the functionality of the product, such as integration with other products like Office. Automation objects must expose a COM interface, and every time we cross a process boundary is worth thinking about performance, but issues that involve correct operation could have a negative impact on performance. This is something we are willing to accept. One example is that objects designed for a single thread execution must execute on Single Threaded Apartment (STA) threads. Having a look at this KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257757/) explains why office products neve......

of 19626 | Confusing picture? - Mike makes an interesting observation about the future of BAM in his post here. I think the scope for confusion and blurring is going to become wider than just BAM though. Microsoft are saying that the purpose of BizTalk is as the “Integration Server” in the jigsaw, while Dublin is the Application Server. Now you can imagine developers building fine grained services hosted inside Dublin and BizTalk providing both ESB and technology/protocol Integration services as well as orchestration but what about the common requirements like a Service Registry or a Rules Engine? UDDI 3.0 will ship with BizTalk 2009 (UDDI previously shipped with W2K3) and both BizTalk and WF have rules engines. As we m......

of 19626 | Emitting XML via LINQ - Just posted about reading XML via LINQ. Now, this post is about the opposite direction - emitting XML from a collection. The simplicity of LINQ provides a straightforward interaction with XML makes LINQ to XML for me one of the easiest and most natural ways to interact with XML. The following emits a collection of objects out to an XElement (which can be streamed elsewhere as required.    35 Customer[] customers = new Customer[]{    36    new Customer{    37     firstName="john", lastName="lennon"},    38    new Customer{    39       firstName="ringo", lastName="starr"} };    40     41 XNamespace ns1 = "UGLY_NAMESPACE";    42     43 XElement cust......

of 19626 | Healthcare Reform in China - Last week I reported on my informative trip to visit customers and partners in Japan.  After returning home to Seattle, I thoroughly enjoyed having a few days off to spend with my family over the long Thanksgiving weekend.  This week, my attention is drawn to China; not for a personal visit but rather to share some information from one of my colleagues.  It has been more than a decade since my last visit to China.  Much has changed since then.  But one of my team members, Ben Flock, with our US Health and Life Sciences group, wrote to me during the tail end of my recent visit to Japan.  He asked if I could share some of his observations on how healthcare is ......

of 19626 | How to interpret SOAP Faults - Apologies for the delay in this post.  I use Windows Live Writer to compose the content on this blog.  It is a wonderful program that makes writing posts easy and straight-forward.  Best of all, it allows offline editing of new and existing posts.  The downside, though, is when you forget to publish the changes! Before we plough forward into using the sample client from the previous post, we must first discuss the different types of SOAP Faults you may receive.  A SOAP Fault is conceptually similar to a .NET exception in that it represents an error condition.  A SOAP Fault may be returned instead of any response message.  The Fault is itself a SOAP Messag......

of 19626 | Screencast: Hosting WCF services in Windows Services - In this screencast, I show you how to host WCF services within traditional Windows services. This is often necessary when you cannot use IIS/ASP.NET hosting for whatever reason or when you don't want to use message-based activation. In certain scenarios you want to ensure that your services are always running and that the host process won't be automatically recycled causing havoc on your underlying resources (think sockets). These are just a few of the reasons why some folks prefer this hosting technique in some cases. Be sure to check out our growing collection of short screencasts on our screencast landing page. It is a tour de force of not only a huge widget library, but he explains how it is much more: So what’s so smart about SmartGWT? Let me try to explain. SmartGWT is not just another Widget library. While most Ajax frameworks focus primarily on presentation and displaying mostly read-only data, either local or via XML / JSON, SmartClient was built with server side integration in mind. Most enterprise applications are not just about about data presentation, but about being able to propagate data changes......

Most would also know, usually through the experience of getting it wrong so many times first, that if more than one assembly contains the same combination of root node and namespace for a schema, the receive pipeline, containing the disassembler, would fail with the error  “Cannot locate document specification because multiple schemas matched the message type “<your message type here>”.” What some miss (ehm, ehm) is that this is not true ......

of 19626 | Average of Anniversaries - I haven't previously denoted an anniversary date for WCF because there are so many to choose from. There's the date we were done, the date that downloads were available, the dates when various versions of Windows Vista came out that put WCF into public retail for the first time, and so on. The anniversary of the average of those potential anniversary dates comes to around today but that feels unexciting as a way to select the day. I kind of like using the first day of public downloads so that may be what I celebrate next year. Last year I didn't need to worry about anniversary celebrations because we had just released Orcas at the one year mark. This year there has been no new rele......

of 19626 | Cloud-Distributed Computing - [Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/EltonStoneman] The combination of .NET Services and SQL Services in the cloud provide a very simple model for implementing massively distributed processing. It's an appealing idea – enterprises of any size have hundreds or thousands of workstations which can be idle for the majority of their time. Assuming a generous average 10% resource utilisation during working hours, workstations which are not powered down are averaging 3.3% utilisation over the working week. Co-ordinating the available processing power of the workstation landscape becomes a lot simpler in the cloud. Work packages are published to the cloud, and workstations retrieve and process t......
