803 of 889 | Installing BizTalk on a Production Server without VS.Net - One interesting learning today...  I was building a BizTalk Server machine that was designed to be a production server (production defined to mean no locally installed Visual Studio.Net, no local SQL Server, etc...)  and ran into a problem where BizTalk couldn`t write a .dll file...  After some nashing of teeth, it turns out that the BizTalk installation program requires permissions to the C:\Windows\Temp directory, and the file name is a temporary name (so it`s different each time you execute the install).  On a single server installation, VS.Net (and perhaps SQL Server), set the permissions on the \Windows\Temp directory so that other apps can write to it...  By not installing VS.Net on t......

807 of 889 | Bill Gates Interop Executive Mail - http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/execmail/ Bill calls out BizTalk Server and Host Integration Server`s key role in interop pretty clearly in this paragraph: "Some of Microsofts server products are focused squarely on interoperability, such as Host Integration Server for mainframe connectivity, BizTalk Server for heterogeneous integration across multiple applications, or Identity Integration Server, which helps simplify user authentication and management across diverse systems. These resulted from many years of working to understand customer needs and their existing environments." Good stuff....

The problem was fairly generic so I thought I would share it. In my solution I had a map that had two schema`s on the left-hand side (described below) : http://schema2ns" /> The first schema was a trading partners schema (which I didn`t have control over) and it didn`t have a namespace... After applying SP1 this map would no longer build; I started getting an error saying “Exception Caught: Cannot use a prefix with an empty namespace“. I understand what this error is saying and yes I was using a prefix with and empty namespace but what got me was that before SP1, this solution built ......

817 of 889 | BizTalk Server 2004 Service Pack 1 XM GDR Dependency Download Instructions - In the BizTalk Server 2004 SP1 install instructions you will see we require a FIX to the .NET Framework.  The fix specifically is for this issue: If you import schemas from assemblies that contain redundant imports. For example, if Schema1.xsd imports SchemaA.xsd AND SchemaB.xsd. And SchemaA.xsd AND SchemaB.xsd both import Schema2.xsd. Without this fix you will receive the following error when you compile Schema1.xsd: schemaLocation could not be resolved Right now the readme for SP1 directs you to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspxscid=kb;en-us;890673 which instructs you to call PSS to receive the fix.  You really do want this fix and it wouldn`t be very efficient if you had to call ......

820 of 889 | BizTalk Server 2004: Generating C# source files - Some time ago I published a utility on GotDotNet.com which dumps the temporary C# source code files generated by BizTalk during compilation. The utility works quite well, but cannot always dump all the files because it is unable to prevent BizTalk from deleting files once compilation is complete. BizTalk sometimes gets there first, removing the temporary files before the utility has a chance to copy them to the target dump location. Another problem is that the files have meaningless names, and are therefore difficult to trace back to the corresponding BizTalk artefacts. The utility is cool…but quite unnecessary. It turns out that Microsoft has implemented an undocumented registry setting to......

824 of 889 | BizTalk Server 2004: Direct Binding models in Biztalk - Unfortunately, the BizTalk help files contain no detailed information on the direct binding models supported for orchestration ports. However, the article grew naturally to include a brief introduction to the subject of binding which I hope will be of use to some readers....

831 of 889 | BizTalk Server 2004: Flexible correlation - BizTalk supports mechanisms for highly flexible correlation, but does not document all of the available options.  In particular, it is not immediately obvious how to assign values directly to correlation sets when those values are not contained in the body of a message and exposed through property promotion.   In fact, the technique is quite straightforward, when you know how!  Click here for more information....

832 of 889 | Contract-first business process design - Jesus posted an interesting response to my post about why BizTalk developers get SO and contract-first. He goes on to explain how BizTalk developers can leverage contract-first design principles using BPEL4WS and BizTalk`s support for importing/exporting such artifacts. In BPEL4WS a business process defines how to coordinate the interactions between a process instance and its partners. All the partners that interact as part of the process are modeled as WSDL services. A BPEL4WS process also is modeled using the WSDL model of separation between the abstract message contents used by the business process and deployment information (messages and PortType versus binding and address information).......

842 of 889 | More on deployment... - Ok, sorry for the short hiatus….very busy times on my current project.  Anyway, I previously mentioned some points around deployment.  It turns out that using BTS Installer doesn’t work well when utilizing roles and parties.  This doesn’t mean we have to scrap the BTSInstaller all together, we just have to do a little extra work in creating scripts that do the deployment as well as the undeployment, and then call those scripts from our MSI package.   In the zip file (get it here), I’ve included some sample scripts that may give you a head start in the deployment process.  Keep in mind that if you are NOT using roles and parties, BTSInstaller will get you about 80% of the way there, and you ......

848 of 889 | To Side-By-Side Or Not Side-by-Side With Whidbey And BTS 2004? - On one of my boxes, on which I was running BizTalk Server 2004, I recently installed Whidbey Beta 1. WHen I was doing some BizTalk development on that box, I noticed that BizTalk will sometimes not process any responses from Web services using the RPC/encoded message style, regardless if they are built with Apache Axis or .NET. The receive action will never finish even though the service sends a valid response. Upon further research, I found that the BizTalk Windows Service, BTSNTSvc.exe, loads the Whidbey assemblies and runtime, not the .NET 1.1 versions. So far, I thought that fusion would load the exact matching assembly if it was available (at least for string-named assemblies such as ......
