of 1492 | Azure Services Platform's Pricing, Availability - The top questions I get about the Azure Services Platform are about pricing and availability. While exact details have not been announced, there are some guidelines that can help ISVs in early decision making about adopting the new cloud platform. The details are provided on the Azure Services Platform Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. ISVs can develop on the platform. Users purchase an ISV application and pays you through your own licensing and pricing model. For you to get an idea of how that will work, the site describes Azure Services Pricing. Pricing The site explains: Subject to certain limits, Azure Services will be available without charge during our Community Technology ......

of 1492 | Events last week - Last week I attended a couple of events. On Wednesday Microsoft held a SOA/BPM day at the offices in Reading and a number of speakers talked about SOA, the Microsoft platform now and in the future and how to deliver the SOA promise using those technologies. It was a mix of stuff I already new or had seen before and some other perspectives. Darren Jefford gave a good demo on the new wave of cloud technologies. One interesting comment relayed something Don Box had said – that we are only 15 years into a 30 year journey on where Microsoft would like to be in terms of modelling and tools. The jump to the cloud platform is the next step but the current suite of technologies we have seen are ver......

of 1492 | Healthcare Reform in China - Last week I reported on my informative trip to visit customers and partners in Japan.  After returning home to Seattle, I thoroughly enjoyed having a few days off to spend with my family over the long Thanksgiving weekend.  This week, my attention is drawn to China; not for a personal visit but rather to share some information from one of my colleagues.  It has been more than a decade since my last visit to China.  Much has changed since then.  But one of my team members, Ben Flock, with our US Health and Life Sciences group, wrote to me during the tail end of my recent visit to Japan.  He asked if I could share some of his observations on how healthcare is ......

of 1492 | Cloud-Distributed Computing - [Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/EltonStoneman] The combination of .NET Services and SQL Services in the cloud provide a very simple model for implementing massively distributed processing. It's an appealing idea – enterprises of any size have hundreds or thousands of workstations which can be idle for the majority of their time. Assuming a generous average 10% resource utilisation during working hours, workstations which are not powered down are averaging 3.3% utilisation over the working week. Co-ordinating the available processing power of the workstation landscape becomes a lot simpler in the cloud. Work packages are published to the cloud, and workstations retrieve and process t......

of 1492 | Living in Outlook: Automatically Categorize With Rules - The Living in Outlook series is about sharing tips and workflows around real-world scenarios. We’ll start the conversation with a topic – you can add to it by posting your tips and workflows in the comments! Because I am usually juggling several projects at once, my Inbox tends to become cluttered with e-mail and meeting requests related to the different things I’m working on. The Color Categories feature has been incredibly useful for organizing and triaging my incoming mail. I have Color Categories defined for each project that I am working on, this way I can quickly tag meetings or mail. Not only is the color of the item now a visual cue, but the categories are anoth......

of 1492 | New Virtual Lab - Using Test First Development with WF 3.5 - I'm very pleased to announce the publication of a new WF 3.5 hands-on lab to the MSDN Virtual Labs site: Using Test-First Development with WF . The new lab covers doing test-first development in the Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) technology. The lab explains [at a high level] the concepts of test-first development, and walks the user through how to unit test both custom activities and full WF workflows. Unit testing and test-first development seems to become a very popular topic in the last...(read more)...

of 1492 | Are designers and developers really that different? - I’m still figuring out this space and caught this great article over on Think Vitamin posing 10 unanswered questions from the FOWD event in New York. The interesting part of the article is reading people’s responses in the comments section (46 at time of posting). Some of my favourites: Would I be a better designer to work with if I knew coding myself? Yes. Do developers appreciate knowledgeable designers? Yes. That was easy. And This could be huge, or very short. In short the above should meld away when designers and developers get the chance to go for a beer / go bowling / etc. chat briefly about what they are doing and realise that they are all on the same tea......

of 1492 | SharePoint and CRM, which tool to use? - When I moved from my previous role into this one, I had to get up to speed on Dynamics CRM having never really looked at it before – and to be honest I had no real desire, it was a CRM tool.  Coming from a classic Microsoft architecture background to say I was pleasantly surprised is a wild understatement.  Microsoft Dynamics CRM is a fantastic product, however the name does it no justice at all. We should be looking to rename it Microsoft Business Application Platform or something along those lines.  It offers you the ability to build dynamic xRM applications; a bunch of entities with various attributes attached to them with relationships between them.  Nice, but not g......

of 1492 | The A-second-or-so Problem - One of the most important lessons I have learned from making web experiences, is that the little things are much more important than the big stuff. It is the little things that kill you. The big stuff is never really a problem. It is easy to see if you make a big mistake, or if some big part of your web application isn't working. The big problems are easily identified and solved. But what about the little things? What if you have a tiny problem? What about a problem that is so tiny that it seems insignificant. The kind of problem where you say: "Oh, that isn't a problem because you will rarely use it, and it only takes about 8 seconds longer to do. In fact, it would take much longer t......

of 1492 | Adding the SitePoint References to Coda - The following is reprinted from the SitePoint Design View, Issue #52 Mac users will no doubt be aware of Coda, the popular text editor for building web pages from scratch. One reason Coda is so popular is because it brings the workflow for building a web page into a single window — you can browse, edit, preview, upload and change permissions on your files, all from the one application. For designers who get frustrated at having five different applications open to perform all of these tasks, Coda is a godsend. There’s one other task that you can perform from within Coda, and that’s look up reference information. By default, the collection of reference books available is minimal, but you can ......

of 1492 | Welcome back - First post in nine months, and very little to report. BizTalk has gone from 2004 to 2006, Windows Workflow Foundation is nearly upon us, and everyone's talking about Web 2.0, whatever that may be. All of which has passed me by, as I've spent most of the last nine months in meetings, fighting fires, and generally trying to keep on top of my undiminishing workload. 18 of 1492 | Enjoying Vista Image Features - If you have followed my blog for a while you know that there were a number of graphic issues I had to begin with.  In a change of event I am noticing lately that there are features of the Windows Explorer that are coming in handy. The first thing was the rating system for images.  Many times I have heard the Lightroom experience described and its star rating system.  From the day I started using Vista I noticed that it had similar capabilities, but it wasn’t clear how to use it beyond a single file.  Honestly, I didn’t think it was that useful and didn’t spend the time to dig deeper. Last week I had a large number of images I wanted to process and I was having a hard time narrowing down t......

of 1492 | SharePoint: Blog, Emails, Workflow… 22 of 1492 | Technical Books… Do you read them? - A few weeks ago David Lean asked me if I read technical  books. Without a seconds consideration I said – “No way – I look online for everything I need, when I need it!”, to which he quickly replied – “I guess you wont be wanting this then!” and went to put the Programming Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 book back in his bag… “Wait!” I said – “I’ve heard about that book! Let me look at it!” ** Now true to my word of not reading technical books, I got home, popped it in my bookshelf (which funnily enough in itself contradicts my initial reply and if nothing else shows that I do have a great number of technical books!) and didn't look at it again… Until last night. I was waiting for some VP......

of 1492 | Eastman Chemical Employees Engineer Thousands of Process Improvements Using Easy-To-Use Software - People drive the most important business outcomes, and software is one of the best investments you can make to enable your people to drive better outcomes.  Eastman Chemical embodies this philosophy in its information technology strategy and the approach is paying dividends. Last month, we released a case study highlighting Eastman Chemical’s approach to driving business value with IT.  Eastman had to answer the question “How do we support a growing business while continuing to optimize our IT resources?” It’s a challenge many chemical companies face - the business demands more, but you have less IT resources to deliver.  Especially in today’s economic environment. 26 of 1492 | Locking Down SharePoint Designer - Hello all, Stephen here again – I’m a writer for SharePoint Designer. As you know, SharePoint Designer 2007 is a powerful tool for editing SharePoint sites — so powerful, in fact, that you likely have scenarios in your organization where you want to control where and how people can use SharePoint Designer 2007. With this post, I’ll try to answer a very common question: “How can I lock down SharePoint Designer in my organization?” And I’ll try to answer the flip side of this question, which arises in an environment where SharePoint Designer has been locked down and the user asks: “Why do I see this message when I attempt to edit a site in SharePoint Designer?” Options for locking down ShareP......

of 1492 | Meer Meer: Cross browser testing all through your one browser! - The most exciting part of Adobe MAX last week was a service that was announced by Paul Gubbay at the “Sneaks” session that shows cool tech that Adobe folk are working on. His (very early stage) service is called Meer Meer and it is genuinely useful. You can plugin a URL and the system will render that page on a server farm (many browsers, cross OS) and show you the results. It can visually layer these results so you can see the differences. It was awesome. I pinged Paul and had a nice conversation with him about the project: Can you explain what Meer Meer is, and where you got the inspiration? Meer Meer is the code name for a new hosted service that allows Web Pros to view their content on......

of 1492 | The twists and turns this industry takes. - It's been an extremely interesting past week. I and a few of my colleagues decided to check out the Adobe MAX 2008 conference to see what the other side has to say about the future of the web (much like their folks come to MIX conferences). I've got a bunch of notes and a lot of what I saw was simply Adobe reacting to Microsoft's position in the market. We've stated workflow and collaboration was the key driver for success, Adobe appears to agree to the point where they've dedicated the bulk of this year to focusing in on our MIX07 style showcase wins, it was almost like watching MIX07 all over again only less sizzle in terms of innovation. Many will comment on what they think has happe......

of 1492 | Cloud Computing - Seriously! - Cloud computing is a disruptive force that has the potential to change everything, but how do we take advantage of it? At Microsoft, cloud computing is a major component of our technology strategy and platform, and a rich and massively scalable cloud platform called the Azure Services Platform was just unveiled at PDC by Ray Ozzie (Ray’s keynote). Come for a discussion on how Microsoft’s platform can be leveraged to create a new class of applications that are more connected, dynamic, and can extend existing IT investments towards cloud computing. Facilitated by Microsoft, the premise of this group is to provide an open forum where architects can meet to discuss technologies with their peer......

of 1492 | Data Services - "Can I get a CustomerService with that?" "No." Why do we always gravitate towards the data centric services? I honestly believe its because its just easier to do. Data is always defined, whether its in DDL (CREATE TABLE ( Name char(4));) or in C# (private string _name;) we have solid ways to define data. These names and definitions make it easier for me to work with it. On top of this, it seems to me that the English language is good at describing nouns (really?), but for some reason when it comes to verbs I begin to falter (That is a brown, female, purebreed horse vs that horse can run like the wind, jump 20 feet high and dance the macarena) there is just something different in the f......
