51 of 1201 | Cloud-Related PDC 2008 Sessions - The PDC team is regularly posting a list of sessions. Lately, they posted a session to give me the opportunity to talk to you about Cloud-based Workflow Services.
Workflow Services: Orchestrating Services and Business Processes
Presenter: Moustafa Ahmed
See how simple it is to use cloud-based workflow to perform complex orchestration across on-premises and cloud services. Also, learn how to run processes in the cloud while simplifying your system and increasing reliability in a distributed environment.
Note that the sessions titles, scope, and defintions are not yet final. The PDC team also published a few other cloud services related talks in PDC. They are a lot to wr......
52 of 1201 | Do you know Silverlight has an inbuilt native RSS Reader? - Interesting, I keep asking this question a lot and the responses I get are something that un-nerves me. In that, in Silverlight there is a native RSS Reader built in, so the ability to consume an RSS Feed is so easy, it's almost cheating (Sharepoint readers, pay attention here). The secret to this can be found in the namespace: using System.ServiceModel.Syndication; The class in question is the SyndicationFeed. Code example of how to use this great API, can be found here: http://silverlight.net/Quickstarts/Remote/ed86e719-0da0-49e1-a9e1-b31f483070d4.aspx I personally have been using it with Sharepoint, in that I'm no Sharepoint 2007 guru at all, I've learnt Sharepoint through just go......

54 of 1201 | How to check if a sharepoint 2007 workflow is running - Searching for a way to check if a workflow is running on a list item (useful, for example, in an item event handler), I found some code like this: public static bool IsWorkflowRunning(SPListItem listItem, Guid workflowId) { foreach (SPWorkflow workflow in listItem.Workflows) { if (workflow.ParentAssociation.BaseTemplate.Id == workflowId && workflow.InternalState == SPWorkflowState.Running) { return true; } } return false; } What this code does is iterate the workflows list for the ......

58 of 1201 | A Brief History in ENTITIES (... or what the Heck is this EF THing?) - part I - So, it seemed like it would be useful to talk a bit about why we built the EF and the EDM, what we think it is and where we think it is going. A lot of docs exist on the EF and EDM. One can find many opinions on both all over the web. I wanted to take time to talk about them from my perspective as a person who has been on the team since its inception. This is merely my perspective and rationale, not intended to be spin. Hopefully it will clarify some things, hopefully it will promote more candid feedback and debate. Starting at the beginning (kind of) -> the making of the EDM Back in the days when we were working on the Whidbey Release (VS 2005), I was in a team called MBF (Mic......
59 of 1201 | Advanced Workflow Service Talk (Demo 4 of 4) - When we start doing this two way style of messaging, we now open up to start modeling some interesting business problems. In the previous post, you'll note that I did not include the code, because I mentioned we needed to be more clever in scenarios where we listen in parallel. First, a brief diversion into how the Receive activity works. Everybody remembers the workflow queues, the technology that underlies all communication between a host and a workflow instance. The Receive activity works by creating a queue that the WorkflowServiceHost (specifically the WorkflowOperationInvoker) will use to send the message received off the wire into the workflow. Now, th......

62 of 1201 | The Emissary Design Pattern and RIAs (Rich Internet Applications) - Here is a first draft of a new presentation. I gave it a couple of months ago just after TechEd and thought I would share it as I try to write up some of my thoughts on RIAs. I plan to rework this a bit more and present it again at TechEd Europe. The talk is titled: "The Emissary Design Pattern and RIAs (Rich Internet Applications)"
Abstract:
The Emissary design pattern was first described in 1999 in the old "Fiefdoms and Emissaries" talk. The concept of a "fiefdom" is very similar to what we today call a service in a Service Oriented Architecture. The fiefdom is a separate trust sphere and transactional boundary. An emissary is a pr......

64 of 1201 | Introduction - How is software created? Well, let me explain things from a different perspective.
What is a human body made of? Atoms, combined to make molecules of Elements and Compounds. These, in special combinations make the DNA and different structures present within the cell. Cell is a unit of life, performing all the major activities, such as metabolism and reproduction. Many different types of cells combine in different ways to make a tissue. Same or different tissues make up an organ, which is the independent functional unit, such as the heart or brain. Many organs communicate with each other to carry out vital functions of the body, hence making a System, such as the Circulatory System or ......

Create a SharePoint workflow (Sequential or State, doesn't matter) for a WSS site (not MOSS). Build the project, you'll get an error similar to the following: Error 3 Feature '739f61bf-5616-427a-80d6-ed30fdc04b1f' could not be installed because the loading of event receiver assembly "Microsoft.Office.Workflow.Feature, Version=12.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" failed: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Workflow.Feature, Version=12.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyTok......
66 of 1201 | How To: Run A Workflow When a Specific Field Changes - Hi all, Kesha here once again with a tip using Workflow. Stephen Howard posted a very helpful video showing how to design a Workflow which runs when a specific field changes, you can find it on Microsoft Office Online . In short, the video demonstrates how to create a mirror field to store the old value of a column, then how to use the conditions to ensure the Workflow runs only when the Document Owner field changes. In addition, the video shows how the conditions prevent “infinite loop”. Pretty good stuff, check it out. Kesha...
67 of 1201 | Refresh SPWorkflowActivationProperties Item - If you're developing workflows for SharePoint 2007, you are probably familiar with the Item property of the SPWorkflowActivationProperties class. Usually your workflow gets an instance of SPWorkflowActivationProperties when the OnWorkflowActivated activity executes, which is bound to a public field on the workflow class so you can hang on to it for the lifetime of the workflow. Perhaps one of the more useful properties of this class is Item, which returns an instance of SPListItem, representing the list item on which the workflow runs. This is all fine, but maybe for more than two step workflows or for a better design/maintainability of the code, it makes sense (and I try to do it) to enc......

68 of 1201 | Advanced Workflow Services Talk (Demo 3 of 4) - So, we've seen in part 1 how to manage context, we saw in part 2 how we can take that basic knowledge to do duplex messaging. Once we start doing duplex work, there are some interesting patterns, and the first one is one that we like to call "long running work". Why are we interested in this? Well, as you probably know, the execution of a workflow is single threaded (this is a feature, not a bug). We also don't have a mechanism to force the workflow to be "pinned" in memory. What this means is that things like the asynchronous programming model (APM), can't be used, since there isn't a guarantee that there will be something to call bac......

Blackpoint is a tool built upon Windows Workflow Foundation and Windows Presentation Foundation that targets SharePoint, allowing users to build workflows and process-driven applications quickly with no code. In this interview, you will see how K2 Blackpoint makes it simple to create a workflow using an InfoPath form, route tasks to a user or group, send an email message, and send an SMS message, all with no code, and done in a very short period of time. Given the price point of $5,000 US, you can easily see how this tool quickly pays for itself. To learn more about Bla......

72 of 1201 | Five Steps to Evaluate Technology Options - Recently a project leadership team I was assisting had the difficult task of selecting between implementation technologies for a distributed architecture. We had brainstormed a list of candidates, and after some investigation were able to enumerate their strengths and weaknesses well enough. But then the decision-making process started to come unhinged as we thrashed about, weighing the various options. How do you narrow the field to a winner, anyway?
When I was able to frame the process in terms of the five steps you are about to read, though, the path to a confident decision became clear. While I am not suggesting that this is the evaluation methodology to end all evaluation methodol......

76 of 1201 | Nice Tutorial from Nick Swans Blog: Sharepoint 2007 Workflows for infopath Forms and Form Services - SharePoint 2007 Workflow with Visual Studio 2005 + InfoPath 2007 (RTM VERSION!)
I have been amazed at how many hits and questions the 'how-to' article I posted on creating a SharePoint 2007 workflow with Visual Studio 2005 and InfoPath 2007 got. That article was based on Beta2 of SharePoint 2007, and although most of the steps are still the same, I decided to rewrite the article now that RTM is out. There were so many questions on the previous post that it was difficult for me to answer them all, so I've got to thank other people who tried out the workflow and got it to work for coming along and helping others. 84 of 1201 | XPS: One format to rule them all (or maybe not) - One format or multiple formats? Some would have you believe that one format does everything everyone will ever need. Some feel that, by extension, two similar formats, or two formats that have some degree of overlap, must be 'competitive' (or designed to be so) because "one format is all you need". On the other side of the fence is a viewpoint that you should use a highly tuned and format that’s optimized for a specific application… sometimes so optimized that it's a pain for anyone else to use. I happen to fall into a more pragmatic group: try and use the best format for the job where ‘best’ is a combination of things like features, performance, interoperability, cost, ubiquity etc. So wh......

91 of 1201 | Custom Persistence Points - Article Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/michaelstephenson
A few weeks back I got a comment to one of my blog posts by a guy who said he wished he had more control over persistence points in an orchestration. In his example he basically wanted to reduce the number of persistence points as he needed to improve performance in what sounded like a request response scenario.
Often in these kinds of scenarios if BizTalk has been well optimised and you still do not get the latency requirements you need then the likely hood is you are trying to solve a problem with BizTalk when a different solution would be most appropriate.
Anyway what did make me wonder was the opposite of what this guy wa......
92 of 1201 | Using nested StateActivity to send regular reminders in Visual Studio SharePoint State Machine Workflow - Note. I want to thank Daniel Odievich for providing the content of this post, a must read! When developing SharePoint workflows, one often needs to send email notification for a task, and then keep sending regular reminders for this task at scheduled intervals. When developing workflows in SharePoint Designer, one can use DelayUntilActivity and DelayForActivity, but those were not designed for in Visual Studio workflows. When using State Machine workflows, the implementation for regular reminders is quite different than that in Sequential workflow. One can use put in EventDrivenActivity with DelayActivity but it will only execute once so you can only have one-time reminder, instead of re......

I need email verification and in case the user loses the password he/she should be able to recover it without knowing (a) username.
This scenario is possible, but requires some customizations of the Membership controls. For instance, you can configure Membership so that an Email is not required, and then customize the CreateUserWizard control so that it uses the text “E-mail:” in place of “Usern......
