of 1492 | Ready for some new UCMA blogs? - At long last this blog is back up and running.  Very soon (current goal is Wednesday), I will start a new series of UCMA blogs covering the new 2.0 API.  My goal is to eventually cover all parts of this now huge set of APIs, but unlike my previous set of posts on UCMA there will be some changes. I will not have a new post everyday.  In the last series I finished all posts before the first one was published.  They then followed each other day by day.  I do have several posts finished right now, but the rest will have to come later. My goal is to show you what the APIs can do and how to do it rather than bring you through a lengthy project buildup.  I simply ......

of 1492 | Register Now for Artists in Residence - Back in February, ShaneMo and Kordesy  attended "Artists in Residence" in Redmond and they were so impressed, they’re bringing it Australia! What is it? The idea of Artists in Residence is to quickly get designers and developers productive with Microsoft Silverlight. Basically it works like this: Artists in Residence runs for 5 days. You send along 2 people – a desinger and a developer. The developer needs basic .NET programming skills, the designer doesn’t need any particular MS skills, but needs to be ready to get the hang of Expression. The first day and a half is training aimed at both designers and developers, getting them productive doing basic tasks in Silverlight using E......

of 1492 | Microsoft Azure Services Platform - I just wanted to sum up what the Microsoft Azure platform is. But before that, just to highlight that the Azure Services Platform is currently a CTP, kind of a very early 'BETA,' available only as a limited Community Technology Preview (CTP) to attendees at the PDC 2008 (Professional Developers Conference). In the near future, it will also be available to more customers & partners. The release date is not fixed yet, but in any case, we are currently in a very early stage. The point today is that it's just been discovered to the public. So, the Azure Services Platform represents a significant advancement for Microsoft’s cloud computing strategy. By bringing the power of Microsoft......

of 1492 | Silverlight Navigation - Part 2 - Welcome to the second in my short series of articles on navigation in Silverlight! In the first article I introduced the core Helix navigation framework and illustrated how the three main classes – Form, NavigationPage, and NavigationLink – could be used to support simple navigation scenarios in Silverlight. In this article I’ll be adding to the core framework to support more advanced scenarios. This article will take us a bit further along the road to Navigation Nirvana. You can download the latest Helix source code from here. The Helix navigation framework uses Uri’s to link everything together within the application. Each navigable part of the application is ass......

of 1492 | [SharePoint Designer]: “Unable to load workflow actions from the server.” -   Today I encountered a new error at work which is: “Unable to load workflow actions from the server. Please contact your server administrator.”   This occurred when I opened a SharePoint site in Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, and then tried to add a Workflow. Apparently, if one makes a mistake when deploying his/her custom activities, no workflows work. The solution to this is to find the error in Visual Studio and then restart the IIS and try over again. Most probably, the error is in the new XML you wrote in the .ACTIONS file, so make sure to first check that out. Goodluck! ...

of 1492 | [SharePoint] State Machine Workflow vs. Sequential Workflow -   The two types of workflows which exist out of the box in Visual Studio are: Sequential Workflow State Machine Workflow Below, find the differences between them, so that when you are thinking of implementing a workflow, you would use the one that fits the most: State-Machine workflows: State-machine workflows are workflows which are driven by particular events. Example: OnTaskChanged OnTaskCreated OnTaskDeleted OnWorkflowActivated etc In order to move to another event, the workflow needs to meet another state. If a task is created, the workflow stays on that event until another even is c......

of 1492 | A First Look at WF 4.0, Dublin, and Oslo - Lots of interesting new technology is on the horizon from Microsoft. Among it is a set of interlated things from the company's Connected Systems Division. This group includes:WF 4.0, which is the next release of Windows Workflow FoundationDublin, a new server for WF applications and others Oslo, a modeling platform that can be applied in lots of different ways.I've written a Microsoft-sponsored white paper introducing these three, attempting (as usual) to paint the big picture. If this picture sounds interesting to you, the paper is available here....

of 1492 | Google Removes OpenID Whitelist Requirement - A day after announcing their support for OpenID, Google has decided to back off on the requirement that relying parties first get approval from Google to accept OpenIDs originating from Gmail. Google says the reason they’re lifting the requirement is that more sites than they could handle applied for API access. Google’s Eric Sachs explains in a blog post what this means for consumers: That registration requirement also led to some confusion because users wanted to be able to use existing websites that accept OpenID 2.0 compliant logins by simply entering “gmail.com” (or in some cases their full E-mail address) into the login boxes on those websites. Normally what would happen after a user ......

of 1492 | TechDays and PDC - It's such an eventful week! 80% of our community team is at TechDays today, and the rest 20% at the Professional Developer Conference in LA.  I presented the last session of the day in Web Developer Track and the first session on Silverlight. I was very anxious to hear the feedback from developers about my session because I was trying to talk about Silverlight controls from both design and development sides. Below are my first and last slides. At the end of the session, I was happy to hear from several developers that they found Expression Blend was very interesting, and they were surprised that it was so easy to create a user control and changing visual states in Blend. At the same ti......

of 1492 | "Oslo": Customizing and Extending the Visual Design Experience - Together with Alex Thissen, Paul Gielens, Marco Stolk and Dries Marckmann we’ve been reflecting our thoughts on “M”. Right now we’re all at another Oslo talk about Quadrant. Why “Quadrant”? As more software becomes more model-driven, the volume of data in the system grows We need a tool that lets people query, update, and visualize that data in ways that make sense for the task at hand. What is “Quadrant”? “Quadrant” is a tool for interacting with data Flexible, focused design surfaces Default experiences over arbitrary data Rich declarative customization “Quadrant” is completely data-driven, every bit of data in SQL Server. “Quadra......

of 1492 | CRM 4: Waiting Workflow VS Windows Service - Guest blogger Ayaz Ahmad is a CRM MVP who blogs at http://ayazahmad.wordpress.com/. Developing some service or workflow to handle some periodic tasks is a common task when creating a CRM solution. Last week, I was looking for the best way to handle periodic tasks such as sending reminders when creating tasks based on date/time, birthday notification and the like. For example, I have an entity project schedule with thousands of records of this entity. For each of these I want to send email reminders. For each record I can have a waiting workflow which results in thousands of waiting workflows. Or, I can develop a Windows service that runs overnight and process records according to my crite......

of 1492 | Some Thoughts on Oslo - I’ve started playing with the Oslo bits a little, and I thought I’d share a couple of thoughts on the platform and its tools: M – The Language M is an interesting beast, but to me the most interesting part of the platform to start with. In particular, I’m looking forward to playing with the MGrammar stuff. I’m not thrilled about the close relationship between M (and its tooling) to SQL, though. In particular, I really think that Don Box and friends really need to find a better example to introduce Models and M; it was painfully obvious (at least to me) during the M language talk that many people just weren’t getting it. ......

of 1492 | PDC 2008 - Unveiling ‘.NET Services’ - Just over three years ago, I was part of the team that launched Windows Workflow Foundation as part of .NET Framework 3.0 at PDC 2005. Shortly after WF, I co-founded a team along with David Wortendyke, John Shewchuk (and briefly Mike Vernal) - we all strongly believed that a developer cloud platform was the obvious evolution in computing. Mike left the team early on (and ultimately left Microsoft to go to facebook) while David, John & I continued pursuing building a platform I often called “the .NET Framework in the cloud”.  This one-time incubation was unveiled to the world as “.NET Services” - a key part of Microsoft’s Services Platform. 145 of 1492 | #PDC08 Talk: Microsoft Silverlight, WPF and the Microsoft .NET Framework: Sharing Skills and Code - High level goals: building rich apps with same people, same skills, same workflow and common code. Shows how to decide when to use Silverlight and when WPF. Moving from Silverlight to full .NET is easier than the contrary. From Full .NET to SL: You need to "unlearn" many APIs. Shared knowledge, but porting code is not easy- Ian codes an application in WPF then copy/pastes to WPF, UI works pretty much the same way, same controls. Uses WebClient to make a request to Twitter. WebClient class is very consistent in WPF and SL. Must use asynchronous request in WebClient because SL only supports async. In Silverlight, we are restricted by security restrictions. Since Twitter doesn't have a cross d......

of 1492 | ADO.NET Entity Framework Hands-on Lab - Last week the Swiss MSDN Team hold once again a Hands-on Lab here in Wallisellen. This time the topic was Entity Framework, the new Microsoft’s technology for bridging the gap between data structures and objects in your applications. The lab was divided into 4 parts. In the first part of the lab attendees were required to create and customize an Entity Data Model (EDM) within Visual Studio 2008 SP1. They saw how it is easy to define a conceptual model which is independent from the underlying data store structure. With the second part they started using the model, by first integrating it in a typical 2-tier Web Architecture (ASP.NET Web Application). The third part instead, the most diffi......

of 1492 | Announcing Microsoft .NET Workflow Service – a "Cloud"-based Workflow host - Last PDC in 2005, I was part of the team that announced Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) as the new declarative programming model in .NET Framework. WF allows you to focus on writing the core logic of your application, declaratively. It handles a lot of complications and logic that exist in applications that orchestrate services or coordinate work. WF is best for programs that are long running; i.e. stop and start during their lifetime. We released key developer enhancement in each version of the framework, and will continue to do so. As more people started using WF, they needed to write WF hosting environments to run the workflows in a scalable and reliable manner – if you ever wrote a se......
