16409 of 17342 | WS-Beers - Glen has a write up on the WS-Beers get together last night, was a lot of fun, some very interesting discussions. One issue that Glen raised, and I totally agree with is when you decide to dump a toolkit and just generate/parse the xml yourself, you must remember to perform the soap processing model rules, Scott Hanselman conveniently posted an example today that skips that step, remember to check for those mustUnderstand headers kids....

16411 of 17342 | WSCF 0.4: Web services Contract-First Design & Development - for real! - OK, it`s about time. There has been a lot of buzz around schema-based contract-first Web services design & developmentlately. Nearly everybody thinks that it is a good thing, and that we finally should reach a state where we all can live and breath it. But most people have been complaining about the lack of tool support for the so called `first step`. We have two big steps involved: Design your contract`s messages and interface Generate code from the contract Our WSCF (aka WsContractFirst) tool has been quite good at the last one of the two points: code generation. But there always was a missing link to how to design and model the contract effectively. Now we from thinktecture are proud to......
16412 of 17342 | XInclude - It`s often convenient to divide long XML documents into multiple files. The classic example is a book, customarily divided in chapters. 16415 of 17342 | Heartland Developer`s Conference was a Blast! - Speaking and being at the Heartland Developer`s Conference was an absolute blast! As Rocky said, Joe Olsen, Kent, and the other organizers should be proud and for a V1.0 product have outdone themselves. They sold out at 150 people in less than 3 weeks. I want to first thank Joe Olsen and Omaha.NET for sponsoring me through INETA. These folks were super and any INETA speaker should be nothing but proud to go out and speak for these folks and the other fine Midwest user groups.
I already alluded to the super 2 and 1/2 hour conversation I had with fellow INETA Speaker Rocky Lhotka that was a peak experience for me and apparently scared some folks-) Rocky is so smart and I just had one of thos......
16416 of 17342 | JSP Conversion Articles and Web Services Interoperability - I am working with several groups of developers that have an extensive background in Java and are currently learning .NET. It was admittedly difficult to find some of this information using MSN Search or Google as most articles that mention both "Java and C#" or "J2EE and .NET" end with "this platform is better than the other". The links below simply detail the differences between platforms and show how to move to C# without the zealotry. Speaking of web services interop, make sure you sign up for the Interop Month web casts. Microsoft is offering a month-long webcast series focusing on interoperability why it matters to the business, common strategies and methods, and guidance on speci......
16417 of 17342 | Quotes of the day -
I arrived at work and found 200+ new posts in xml-dev list. Lovely. XML is still extra hot topic. Here are some nice quotes:
For my money, XQuery is a heroic effort by a bunch of incredibly smart people which is crippled - we don`t know how seriously - by its insistence on cohabiting with XSD.
Tim Bray
XSLT has an construct that does a shallow copy of an element node
together with all its namespaces (yes, you`re right, I wouldn`t expect
anyone to guess its specification by looking at the element name, any more
than I would expect anyone to guess what a left outer join operator does).
XQuery has no equivalent. My XQuery example used a computed element
constructor, which is the equ......
16418 of 17342 | Sun and Microsoft moving towards digital identity interop - On December 1st, a news teleconference was held that discussed some of the progress that Sun and Microsoft have made since swapping hockey jerseys. The transcript of the Sun and Microsoft news conference is available online, and there is some great information tucked within. Hi, so today, as you`re probably all aware, there are two major stacks, software stacks around Web services, there`s the Liberty technologies, and there are the technologies around WS Star, the federation and security protocols. One of the things that we`ve heard time and time again from our customers is that they would like to be able to build systems that can work in either direction. So, for example, if we had Micr......

16419 of 17342 | Internet Time and the Long Now - I wish to thank Edd Dumbill for syndicating the Metaphorical Web on his superb blog aggregator site http://planet.xmlhack.com. It`s an honor and a privilege, and I hope to be able to produce commentary in keeping with the luminaries on this board. I`ve been pondering for a while the state of the XML world. XML has now been in existence as a standard for nearly seven years. XSLT and XPath for six, SVG for four and change. By the scale of Internet time (how retrograde that expression seems now) these technologies are no longer bright and shiny new, but are actually approaching middle-aged. Heck, Microsoft would have gone through two world changing marketing campaigns by now, and would be gear......

16420 of 17342 | A VS.NET Add-In for "Contract First" development -
Disclaimer: There is a good chance you have already
heard of this Add-In and/or the concept of contract-first development of Web
Services. I just felt I would be remiss for not having a link to it ... even if
it has existed longer than this blog has. Heck, even if I`ve just made it easier
to find, I`ve done my part.
As I`ve said before, if you`re designing and developing Web Services, the
most important thing you should be thinking about is what that XML message will
look like on the wire. The easiest way to do that is to create the WSDL document
first. I know this isn`t very intuitive the first couple of times, but if you`re
comfortable with XSD, you can probably copy/paste/modify......

We of course beeing geeks set up the obligatory wireless network in Kent`s hotel room. I had a fascinating 2 and 1/2 hour free-ranging conversation with Rocky which started with SOA and went everywhere else. I don`t want to give it away for attendees who will have the keynote in an hour and 1/2 from now but lets just say that he is skepetical on SOA. 16449 of 17342 | Versioning Web Services - Don and Dare have been posting on versioning web service endpoints. Don favors versioning with a single parameter, while Dare favors multiple parameters. I agree with Don. Don makes a distinction between a service that is service-oriented and one that is not. I am not sure I agree with the distinction, though. This is akin to justifying 500 lines of code in Button1_Click events versus proper application design: jsut because you can, doesn`t mean you should, even in smaller scale scenarios. If you version a service interface by adding parameters, then you affect the ability for legacy systems to version along with the system. Instead of focusing on the message contract, they are now s......
16450 of 17342 | Viewing WSE Trace Files - One of the neat features of Microsoft`s WSE Toolkit is that with the click of a button you can have all incoming and outgoing SOAP messages from a client or service recorded in trace files. These files, named by default InputTrace.webinfo and OutputTrace.webinfo, can be helpful for debugging or for gaining a deeper understanding as to the actual XML being scurried back and forth between a client and a Web service. One thing that`s always irked me, though, is that these trace files are simply appended to with each run. This is fine and good, I guess, but it makes it hard to pick through these logs.
Every time I introduce WSE to my Web Services .NET students, I show them the tracing features,......
