2009 of 2059 | Heartland Developer`s Conference was a Blast! - Speaking and being at the Heartland Developer`s Conference was an absolute blast! As Rocky said, Joe Olsen, Kent, and the other organizers should be proud and for a V1.0 product have outdone themselves. They sold out at 150 people in less than 3 weeks. I want to first thank Joe Olsen and Omaha.NET for sponsoring me through INETA. These folks were super and any INETA speaker should be nothing but proud to go out and speak for these folks and the other fine Midwest user groups.
I already alluded to the super 2 and 1/2 hour conversation I had with fellow INETA Speaker Rocky Lhotka that was a peak experience for me and apparently scared some folks-) Rocky is so smart and I just had one of thos......

I had a fascinating 2 and 1/2 hour free-ranging conversation with Rocky which started with SOA and went everywhere else. I don`t want to give it away for attendees who will have the keynote in an hour and 1/2 from now but lets just say that he is skepetical on SOA. 2033 of 2059 | Kiss your favourite XML editor bye bye! (and welcome Domain Specific Languages designers!) - With the advent of XML, each and every piece of software is configurable with it, from Virtual PC to IIS to log4net to Shadowfax and all the Application Blocks released from PAG ... you name it. If you think about it, however, it`s quite easy to realize that what those XML files are actually, is nothing more than a text-based representation of the concepts in the particular domain of the tool/app. So, log4net has the concepts of Appenders, Filters, Object Formatters, and so on, while Shadowfax (as most SOA frameworks) has the concepts of Pipeline, Handler, Service Action, and so on. Therefore, XML is just a means to express the particular layout/behavior you want these tools/frameworks to......

2034 of 2059 | David Chappell on why SOA will help business-oriented software reuse -
In a recent Opinari email (I can't find it on his website), David
Chappell defends his belief reuse is one the fundamental benefits of Service-Oriented
Architecture and that SOA will be more successful than previous approaches such as
object-oriented or component-oriented development. His rationale is that services
operate at a higher level of reuse than binary classes, and they solve many of the
human problems that prevent reuse, such as having to have one single view of business
entities and forcing reuse through 'draconian' human policies.
Here's my summary of his three major arguments:
Service orientation will lead to better reuse of business-oriented sof......

The talk examines using XML with SQL Server 2000, SQLXML 3.0 and, if time permits, SQL Server 2005. Here are some details on the talk: XML capabilities are becoming a core requirement for many of today`s business applications. While XML has been the preferred technology for exchanging data, XML is now also becoming the technology of choice for system integration, loosely-coupled systems and service-oriented architectures. First and foremost: Thanks for the cudos. I especially like the following quote:
As my applications move more toward SOA style architectures returning XML data directly from SQL Server takes alot of the drudge work out of creating retrieve code.
Regarding an EXPLICIT mode designer: We already have some form of EXPLICIT mode designer (although it could be more user-friendly): Use XPath against annotated schemas and then read the generated query from the Profiler trace :-).
