301 of 344 | A Java based XML browser : X-Smiles - X-Smiles is a Java based XML browser. It is intended for both desktop use and embedded network devices and to support multimedia services. The main advantage of the X-Smiles browser is that it supports several XML related specifications and is still suitable for embedded devices supporting the Java environment. The main objective of X-Smiles project is to deliver a pure Java XML browser, capable of displaying documents written in various XML languages. The X-Smiles browser should support at least: XML+CSS XHTML XSL Transformations (XSLT) Synchronised Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) XForms XHTML X3D Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) XSL Formattin......

304 of 344 | Microsoft Word, XML, and the hierarchical DataSet - I was finalizing some demos for an internal event here at Microsoft. We have an internal conference for people from the field and elsewhere to learn more about our technologies, do some hands-on labs and so forth. It`s goodness. I am doing a presentation on...yeah- Word, Excel, and the XML story. It`s fertile ground, and I never tire of farming it. One of things I will show is how to build Word documents from XML directly- nothing earth shattering in and of itself as we have a number of canned demos for this. However, I will show how to use .NET and/or SQL Server`s XML support to make all of this happen. For example, in my last demo, I use a custom winform app to connect to a database. I pu......

311 of 344 | Idea for usage in regards to Dimitre`s "meta-data" post - Something just occured to me as far as a really useful way of using the “meta-data” obtained during the recursive processing of a sequence of nodes. Take for example the following use-case:Contained within the test-suite code I posted a week or two ago is contained a combination of XML and XSL files. In the config-bat-output.xml file the following XML structure and data exists:...

312 of 344 | Meta-data in XSLT 2.0 - In a recent post to XSL-List Dimitre Novatchev brings out what I believe to be an extremely important aspect in regards to understanding all that is taking place in our code and to easily be able to use that information in other areas of our code or in cases such as debugging, documentation, etc... More importantly he discusses that at present time the "meta-data" stored in an atomic value can not be represented "natively in XML" and as such must be processed first adding each atomic value to the node of a node-set or to further pipe the result of the transformation outside of the transformation as a delimited string for further processing by another application or language implementation.......

[followed by whatever other choice words you might have for me because of this...]can I just say that it was reading Adams latest post that reminded me of this obvious fact and got me going on this kick to get this list updated with each individual and/or entity that so rightfully deserves a spot as a member of this exclusive list of developers and entities who have had a positive affect on the XSLT development community as a whole. It also reminded me that I have planned for some time now to begin a section on this blog called "The Adam Boswo......

314 of 344 | Umm, so who won this bet anyway - XML.com: XSL Considered HarmfulI was recently pointed to this article in the archives of XML.com and my eyes are now swelled with tears of both laughter and joy. I`m guessing that TransforMiiX is the result of the begrudged team of so-called crack Mozilla developers (is that what has fueled the development of Mozilla all these years Yikes!) having to pay up after losing this bet If so it seems there is yet one more reason why G. Ken Holman is a member of the Legends of the XSLT Community :). I don`t think anybody is going to try and contend that CSS is not an overwhelmingly powerful and appropriate technology for the web and I know from my own development that the marriage of these two ......

315 of 344 | Jean Paoli speaks out on XML and the future - Paoli: Information correlation, reasoning next step for XMLNow that XML is successfully employed on the front end as well, what`s nextPaoli: XML is at the front end. Adobe, OpenOffice, they`re adding XML to the front end as well. The technology is here, that`s the fun part of this for me. This is the tip of the iceberg because imagine a time when millions of documents are stored and archived in XML. Project yourself in a few years, millions of documents created by humans, stored in databases. For IT it`s data, for users, it`s documents. Then, we`ll have millions of new opportunities to start correlating the information, think about reasoning on top of it and managing it.---Recently [and in ......

In this post he showcases the source for two different methodologies used in grouping similar XML elements, attributes, and/or the data they contain and brings out the following results:The results in milliseconds, using Saxon 6.5.3 on a 3GHz 2GB RAM PCare as follows: Muenchian code: 1265 Sergio recursive: 38188He then follows with:I will be glad to provide the source xml document used in the test toany interested person (and why not put them somewhere on the ......

318 of 344 | FXSL for XSLT 2.0 (version 1.1) now available - In a recent post to XSL-List Dimitre Novatchev announced the availability of version 1.1 of his FXSL for XSLT 2.0 template library. FXSL is a combination of Functional Programming extensions to XSLT that brings an astounding level of power and higher-order capability unavailable in the base foundation of both XSLT 1.0 as well as XSLT 2.0. In addition to this XSLT 2.0-based release there is a version of the library available for XSLT 1.0 conformant processors. 319 of 344 | New Alternative to Muenchian Method of Grouping - In a post to XSL-List yesterday Sergiu Ignat states:I would like to present you a simple, XSLT 1.0, fast grouping method with a O(N*log(N)) complexity, the same as sorting. The only grouping method I knew so far is Muenchian that has O(N^2) complexity. As Jay Bryant states in a follow up at first look this method seems interesting but as Michael Kay points out things may not be exactly as Sergiu suggests. The best way to find out of course is to write the code using the Muenchian method that uses the same criteria to produce the same output and then transform the test XML with both stylesheets using Saxon and the -t option to determine the time each method takes to finish. So I’ve done jus......

321 of 344 | Accessing raw text files using XSLT 1.0 - Every once and a while someone will post a question to XSL-List in regards to accessing non-XML files and using them in a transformation. While its impossible in XSLT 1.0 to directly access non-XML text files heres a trick that David Carlisle recently posted to yet another question on this subject:--> I need my xsl reads a txt file, like this:XSL1 can only read XML files, although you can easily make an xml file wrapper around your text if you have a file.txt that you know doesn`t have any & characters in it then you can make a file.xml that looks like]]>&x;then in your xslt you can goand will get101010101010101011110101010101010101110000101010101010101000011010101010101010101011011as the......

323 of 344 | XMLize - Many XML technologies and tools, such as XSL for transforming or formatting XML data, are useful and powerful. In some cases, it even makes sense to use XML technologies to process non-XML data. This article introduces the idea of handling non-XML data with XML technologies based on the author`s experience developing a data transformation tool. The key point here is to XMLize the non-XML file format first, and then further process the generated XML files with a corresponding XML technology....

These new specifications represent cross-industry and expert community agreement on technologies that will enable the transformation and styled presentation of XML documents. A W3C Recommendation indicates that a specification is stable, contributes to Web interoperability, and has been reviewed by the W3C membership, who favor its adoption by the industry. "Anyone using XML can now take advantage of XSLT, a powerful new tool for manipulating, converting or ......

344 of 344 | Using the XSLT document() function in .NET 1.1 - Version 1.1 of the .NET platform sports a slightly different XslTransform object with more secure Load() and Transform() methods. Many of the overloaded versions of the Transform() method from version 1.0 of .NET are now considered to be obsolete. If you take a closer look at the Transform() method (in the documentation for version 1.1 of the framework) youll see that the new overloads expect you to pass an instance of an XmlResolver. An example of one of these overloads is shown below: public void Transform(XPathNavigator, XsltArgumentList, TextWriter, XmlResolver); This a little confusing for some because XmlResolver is an abstract class that cannot be created directly. However, ......
