The <label> Tag (XHTML Reference)

Introduction

In a real world a label is something on a t-shirt. You will never find a label alone; it is always attached to something. The same can be said if you use the <label> tag in web pages. A label is usually bound to a control. If you have already worked with radio or check buttons then you know that these controls don’t provide a label or text about the button. In that case you can bound a label to a radio button with the “for” attribute. If the user then presses the label the checkbox or radio button will become selected or unselected. You just have to set the ID of the control equal to the value for the “for” attribute. The following example will make that clear.

Example

<input type="radio" name="one" id="one" />

<label for="one">One</label>

<br />

<input type="radio" name="two" id="two" />

<label for="two">Two</label>

Output

 Attributes

Name:

Description:

accesskey

Defines an alphabet for the keyboard shortcut. You can use ALT + alphabet

for

Specifies the ID of the control to which the label belongs.
