XMLDOMProcessingInstruction

Any processing instruction found in an XML file is returned as an XMLDOMProcessingInstruction object. Therefore, it's good practice to check the type of Node that you are working with, in case one of these PIs or comments pop up. For example, this PI has been added in between an element:

<PERSON id="p1">
<?realaudio version="4.0"?>
<NAME>Mark Wilson</NAME>
<ADDRESS>911 Somewhere Circle, Canberra, Australia</ADDRESS>
<TEL>(++612) 12345</TEL>
<FAX>(++612) 12345</FAX>
<EMAIL>markwilson@somewhere.com</EMAIL>
</PERSON>

  • The same issue applies to comments in your XML file. They are represented as Nodes as well.
  • As the XMLDOMProcessingInstruction object is writable, you can add a PI to a DOMDocument (see the nodeType property later in this chapter).

This manuscript is an abridged version of a chapter from the Manning Publications book XML Programming with VB and ASP. This chapter looks at the Microsoft DOM objects. NOTE: Most images have been removed to increase speed and many of the code comments have also been removed for presentation. Please purchase the book to enjoy the full experience of all the chapters with images and code comments!
