XSLTester

XSLTester is an Open Source project.

Xselerator

Also worth taking a look at, check out Xselerator - the leading Visual XSL Editor which offers breakpoints in both the XML and XSLT.  It's a modern programming IDE and you can download a free 30 day trial!

This is what Donald Kackman (who started XSLTester) had to say about Xselerator:  "I've played a bit with Xselerator and it is a great tool. They did a wonderful job with it. They went the whole nine yards and I am impressed. Maybe we should put a note on the XSLTester page. Something to the effect that XSLTester is a good learning tool but if you want a full-up IDE check out Xselerator."

XSLTester began it's life as an ad hoc tool for quickly viewing the output of style sheet transformations while authoring XSL, because I got sick of switching back and forth between Notepad and IE (then choosing "View source" to see the actual transform output).

It's been refined and tweaked bit by bit to the point where it's definitely a useful tool when working with XSL. Using it you can author both XML and XSL documents. You can also view the results of the transformation both as raw text or rendered by an Internet Explorer window.

XSL Tester provides the basic tools needed to edit, view, and test XML and XSL documents. XSL Tester is licensed under the GNU General Public License. See the disclaimer and licensing page for more details.

Features include:

  • Dual view paradigm with an "Edit" and IE5 rendered "Preview" for each document.
  • An XML formatter to normalize the indentation of XML source.
  • Side by side viewing of source and output documents.
  • Customizable XSL template insertion.
  • XML validation and error reporting.
  • Customizable transform options.
    • Set validation and external resource resolution options before parsing
    • View output as XML or XHTML
    • Set the context at which the transformation occurs

You can download either the latest version of the code (which requires VB 6 SP3 and IE5) or an installation program (which will install everything you need to run - it is about a 3 meg download). Please take note of the dependencies page which describes some of the binary files that XSL Tester requires be installed on a target machine.

You can browse a list of enhancement ideas or see a screen capture of the main application window.

XSL Tester is an Open Source project so the more people who work on it, the better it gets. So please send me your ideas, comments and updates.

Good luck,
Don Kackman
